What's stopping bad actors from making really cool looking servers, attracting lot's of people who pay a deposits to join. Then when the time is right. The mods just prune everybody take the deposits for themselves, making out like bandits.

I definitely agree crypto could work in a diminished capacity at the absolute most. I'm thinking like having an option to donate monero anonymously as a way to support an instance or even a specific community. That's pretty it for me. I would fear the day that BitBoy Crypto lays his grubby little fingers on this site and all of the NFT scammers and Crypto Br0s follow suit. At that point I'm out.

10$ is what my mom spends on food for my family right now doing surveys on QMee until my dad is finally able to get a job. I know I'm a rare breed in this respect. But if joining an instance cost money or crypto or whatever, that would be a HUGE barrier for entry for me right now because we'd have to decide between eating tonight or going on social media (I think you which choice I'd make.) I'd rather just wait to be vetted by a mod. I just did that, waited a few hours and joined Fostodon no problem.

I know 10 dollars doesn't seem like a lot, and I have no intention to go all woe is me. But if Lemmy cost money, I'd just tough it out on Reddit or any number of centralized social media sites where at least it's free.

I think it has merit but unfortunately I would NEVER want to be a part of that just because how tight things are right now.

And to put my money which I desperately need for other things just to have it stolen by a powermod because they're looking for some extra cash would be demoralizing.

Hey I just realized that there is a Fediverse community, if this is considered off topic I apologize I'd be happy to delete this. My bad.

I'd also recommend ViMusic. It is similar to SpoTube but in my opinion it's more user friendly.

For me it's ViMusic. I was stuck with a shitty Spotify subscription that I couldn't afford until I found Vi. It has pretty much all the bands I like and it passed my moms rigerous examination (she listens to all of of really obscure stuff) so when her Amazon subscription ran out, I got her to start using that instead. Suck it jezzy b!

I don't have enough money for a phone number to give to any government agency much less to Signal. My phone ran out of service months ago and no one in my family is even able to re-up theirs much less spot me the scratch to help me with mine. In a perfect world where I could afford a cell phone plan I'd probably go for both honesty. They both have access to perks that I could use. But yeah I'd choose FOSS any and every day.

I use LibreOffice. I was using office 365 on my laptop and I just got sick of microsoft (especially after that incident where it took them six months to give me back access to my outlook account essentially rendering many services on my old PC useless) so I started looking up alternitives to Word.

My family had been using KingSoft which is a hot buggy mess so I chose LibreOffice instead. It was one of the first open source apps I chose after leaving Microsoft and I haven't looked back. If I had to pick a problem it's that 365 was way better at correcting mispelled words but other than I love LibreOffice!

Yeah you know what, nah not touching Element. I joined the biggest RPG group on the site and it was all proud boys and the most professional looking InfoSec discussion board with over 1800 people is a dead group where people spammed gore pictures. Screw that, Element is a cesspool. Simplex is the winner Ding, ding ding, ding! I'm closing up shop now, I need to wash out my eyes

I would have made a new post but I didn't want to seem like I'm hogging the bandwidth on this group by posting so close together so I asked here. Hopefully that's okay. You've all been so helpful, thank you guys.
