I have the My Weigh scale and haven't had to change the battery yet, couple of years in. Love it. I think if you want an unpowered scale a balancing scale and weights are the lowest tech and accurate.

Book a long, long transatlantic or transpacific cruise that is leaving today or tomorrow morning. Bring as much as I can carry and a life straw and bunch of filters.

Anything helps, of course. Anything is so much better than nothing.

You are skinnyfat, yes? You don't want to lose weight, you want to add lean mass. Weights are what do that best. Ideally you would want to lift heavy at least thrice a week if you are trying to shape up.

I can only lift once a week lately (lady, mid 50s) but do yoga 4x/week too. It's maintaining me reasonably lean.

I have been where you are (single working parent) and what I did back then was wake up at 5am and run, because that was the only time of day nobody needed anything from me, and running is nearly free, just shoes. It sucked, but the days I ran I did feel better later on, it was worth it overall I think. If there is any way you can wake up a half hour earlier and do something vigorous, and then add weight training once a week I think you will get good improvement. Just maybe not as much mass as you ideally want.

At my work we jokingly dismiss each other, someone will stand up and say to someone else "hey, John, you can go home now" as though they are the boss, and then that person will say to someone else "hey, Jane, you can go home" and so on. Until we are all dismissed for the day.

I am not sure. I'm white (enough to have benefited from it anyway) and progressive and most of the people at my work are not conservative regardless of race. My mom and dad and Dad's family, all were progressive, I grew up in a household that was not conservative.

When I ask people who are Republican still (some older people did shift after Trump 1) the way they talk about politics doesn't make any sense to me. My guess is that now they live in a different media ecosystem and absolutely believe some things that most people don't, and that fear is leveraged by the Republican politicians. They talk about things I've never heard of, and when I say it sounds like not real things that just makes them feel like they are better informed, it doesn't occur to them that they are being fed nonsense.

I wouldn't discount racism and sexism, those are still around and so some people may think they will benefit if others are held back, may see the economy as a zero sum game. So they think being on the winning team might benefit them somehow.

But mostly, at least with the younger set, I think they are brainwashed in a different direction than the rest of us and honestly believe that somehow reducing regulations on business, forcing more social conformity, that those things will make a better world.

Husband does this, I like going somewhere to work out because it's more fun, though. I do lift his weights, and go to yoga classes with other people, that works. He says it was expensive to get all that stuff but it was so long ago it's paid off.

I mostly just want to gently suggest that part of what people are getting from "the gym" is socialization, not just exercise. Which might be something you'd pay to avoid, I don't know, but group exercise is a different experience from just lifting at home, and I enjoy it much more.

Yes, shake and just pour everything in the shaker into the glass, don't strain it over new ice.

This makes sense, but I don't think you need to change your feelings. Your actions are what affect the people outside of you, they don't know what you are thinking, and you already recognize it's not reasonable.

I remember when I went back to work after a few years raising my kids. It was odd to work with men, after only being close with the one man. But over time, it got normal and I am friends with some of them still, platonic friends. So some of it is literally just practice. Keep practicing. You sound pretty self aware, I think you will be ok.

Seitenbacher Museli is delicious too.

But you can make a kick ass veg broth with scraps, dried shitake, and a piece of kombu.

And the Museli I can also make at home.

Sundowner (lemmy.world)

January is over, Wednesday is here and I am having a cocktail before supper.

A Sundowner.

2 parts cognac

1 part Galliano

1 part orange liqueur

1 part lemon juice

Shake and dirty pour into rocks glass.

Delicious as you would expect. This is a little less lemon than the standard recipe (making avgolemolo and needed most of the juice for that) and is a little too sweet, it does need the extra tartness; and honestly I might also sub fresh OJ for the liqueur and try that, but I do love Galliano in orange juice.

I think you could mix this into a very, very good crowdpleaser punch for a party with half this and 1/4 Sprite and 1/4 soda water.

Comics not related just going to read them this weekend

And vice versa.

My kids' elementary biology teacher had a zoo in his classroom, all these snakes and lizards and spiders, all sorts of animals, so in the Christmas break he had to farm them out. We got the tarantula once, and once a boa.

Also twice raised abandoned baby squirrels we saw kids walking around with. Like my ex just said "dude, you know how to take care of that?" And the kid shook their head no. Yes, twice. One was Earl, one was Pearl. They were sweet, and very sharp.

One of my kids' swim coaches had a friend with a pet crow, too. A sailor with a pet crow; in fact a creepy sailor with a pet crow

I am sure you can guess what state I live in.

Run for office?

All day making olive bread, let it overproof accidentally, it is not rising. Just venting, I am mad.

I'm having a whiskey sour. Delicious.

What are you drinking, be it cocktail, wine, coffee, whatever! Anything interesting?

4 cherries

1/2 tsp sugar

1 tsp instant coffee

2oz bourbon

Scant oz Cherry Heering

Scant oz lemon juice

1/2 oz Amaretto Adriatico

Tsp juice from amaretto cherries

Muddle the cherries with the sugar and coffee, add the liquids and stir to make sure the sugar and coffee are dissolved. Shake with ice.

I think it would work very well up in a coupe, it's a looker, but I wanted the big clear ice today.

Been reading the Transformers 2 seasons, such a good story. Not related to the drink just a good backdrop.

And Harley says hi!

4 mint leaves

.75 oz simple syrup

1 oz milder scotch

1/2 oz Laphroaig (I don't have so used 1.5oz Benromach not split base)

1/4 oz Chartreuse

3/4 oz lime

The proportions seem off to me, though it may just be the missing Islay scotch. Less lime, less sugar would work better for me, would recommend - increase the Chartreuse to 1/2 oz, decrease lime to 1/2 oz and just muddle the mint with a pinch of sugar no syrup.

Working up the Christmas cocktail. First round.

50ml Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond

50ml Amaretto Adriatico Bianco

35ml lemon juice

I liked it but think it will need to be sweeter to be a crowdpleaser. This Bianco Amaretto is a stunner, not at all cloying like Amaretto can be, light and delicious. I haven't got the hang of the salted one yet but this I can work with.

Was making a paper plane today, I always double the bourbon and add a splash of Campari. Amaretto/Bourbon sour, double the bourbon. In general, it seems drink recipes are often too sweet for my palate

Are there changes you always make?

Working up a cocktail for a party to celebrate a half-Philippine wedding. Calamansi puree was available from Walmart so that's what I'm trying. So far, this is quite good.

2oz Calamansi Puree

2oz white rum

1/2 oz Aperol

1/2 oz orange liqueur

Splash of Orgeat

2 Splashes of simple syrup 2x strong

I shook it and it's got the spirit of the fruit for sure, easy drinking, sweet (the Calamansi is quite tart, this might be too sweet but when batching it, should be easier to adjust) It is not literally floral or perfumey but tastes like a fruity/floral perfume smells, hangs together extremely well.

It might taste better with a more assertive rum, but needs to be beautiful looking so it has to be the clear rum. For the batch I have a 2L of Stade's Barbados, could probably use a 750ml of more rum if anyone is familiar with the calamansi flavor has a suggestion for one that would work well, or cachaca perhaps?

Not a contest. For December, make a drink you've never had before and post it here.

If you are celebrating (or observing, or suffering) Thanksgiving, what are you drinking?

Starting things off here with a Mimosa, after two days of cooking.

It's not really harvest time in Florida, but did cook some sweet potatoes I grew this summer.
