I don’t think Spez or Dorsey started out dumb.
Can't speak for Dorsey but Spez started out standard libertarian tech dude dumb vis a vis making reddit "free speech" and enabling the jailbait and racism subs to exist.
The caveat there is that at the time there wasn't a invite system. You'd just add mods. So him getting modded there isn't as big a deal as one would think.

He got addicted to benzos and had himself put in a coma in russia to cold turkey it (against advice to ween off it from doctors in north america). Shit got fucky and he got brain damage from it.
Couple levels of lols there since he did papers on drug addiction in the past and his schtick is not looking for easy answers... but thats the one he took.

As I understand it, it's likely because he didn't pay his server bills to Google. and wasn't able to migrate enough stuff off in time. Maybe he thought that like the dudes he's renting buildings from, he could just not pay and they'd wait. The difference of course being that, Google can repurpose those servers within a few days. Those buildings might remain empty for months.
