Social media sleuths try to solve Pasadena’s urine bottle mystery

by: Marc Sternfield

Two local filmmakers are trying to solve a mystery that has confounded and disgusted residents of Pasadena for more than two years: Who is placing containers full of urine atop a utility box, and why?

As the Los Angeles Times reports, the so-called “Piss Bandit” has been fixated on a specific Pasadena Water & Power electrical box on Colorado Boulevard – leaving behind bottles and even large jugs of urine.

Some are even labeled as such.

In a series of True Crime-style videos posted to TikTok, Derek Milton and Grant Yansura have made it their mission to document and potentially expose the culprit.

One video, which includes night vision hidden camera footage, has amassed over six million views, and subsequent videos have reached millions more. Pasadena Piss Bandit Bottles of urine are seen atop a utility box in Pasadena, California, in 2024. (TikTok @_derekmilton)

A city spokesperson told the L.A. Times that police in Pasadena are also interested since the bottles have irked residents and drawn complaints.

Recently, the city tried to stop the “Piss Artist” -as Milton calls him- by installing a triangular metal cap atop the electrical box so it was no longer flat.

It didn’t work.

The person destroyed the cap, leaving shards of metal on the ground – along with a fresh delivery of urine-filled bottles.

Milton and Yansura believe the “bandit” is a single man. As to his motive, no one is quite sure.

The way /c/Canada doesn’t turn into /r/Canada is by staying and engaging

I hate to be that guy who says "this", but...this. 100%. I came across one comment somewhere on Lemmy that said something like "how we build the communities now will dictate how they are in the future". It's kind of cheesy, but I want to believe that we can build something better and more positive than reddit is/was. There's too much negativity on the internet these days.

I'm enjoying it so far. I like that it's not a direct one-for-one clone of reddit (not that it was intended to be). It feels like a combination of older reddit (> 10 years ago, when it wasn't as active) and old school forums (like how older posts will bump if there's activity). It makes me want to be more active vs being a lurker.

I have no intention of going back to reddit. I've already deleted RIF from my phone. The 3PA thing was the last straw for me, but I felt like reddit had been going downhill for a while and I think I had been looking for an excuse to fuck off but couldn't quit cold turkey. Whatever good intentions that company might've started with, they're just a greedy corporation now. They haven't cared about their users for a while (which is interesting because their users are what create their content. Reddit itself doesn't create anything).

I've got nothing against porn, but goddamn, I had to block that tushybot account because that spam was getting annoying.

I might be in the minority here, but I was really enjoying Lemmy before the porn posts started showing up in the All tab. Again, nothing against porn, but it's something that I'd rather seek out if I'm in the mood rather than having it interspersed between memes and shit.

Hanging out on Lemmy. Finding communities to replace the subreddits I used to frequent and creating ones when I can't find them (hence this Lemmy community haha)

The whole situation is a little bittersweet. I deleted RIF from my phone this morning. For me, the 3PA thing is a piss off, but what really made up my mind to quit is the blatant disrespect from Reddit as a company. Like, I understand Reddit is a company and they're out to make money, but they don't actually create anything, y'know? Their whole business is making money off users either creating or sharing content and to turn around and basically shit on that, it's certainly something else.

13 year old account checking in. I'm undecided if I want to fully delete or not yet. I want to at least hang on until the end of June when shit will really hit the fan (if it does). I'm always up for watching a train wreck.

I deleted all my comments and submissions today (except for a comment thanking the RIF dev and a couple of comments shitting on /u/spez). Not that I was ever a particularly popular redditor, but I'll be fucked if they'll earn another penny on any content I've created.

Hello fellow Canucks! Slowly getting used to how this all works and gotta admit, it's kind of neat so far! Looking forward to trading my crippling reddit addiction for a crippling Lemmy addiction.
