In every D&D campaign I have run, the players have come across a community of "inflated earthers" who believe the earth is a balloon, and that digging too deep could cause the planet to sag or pop. In every campaign, they are right.

160 years ago in 1865, slavery was outlawed except as punishment for a crime. This posed a severe shortage of cheap labor, which was solved by creating a plethora of fiddly little crimes targeting the poor and marginalized. The next 75 years, the role slavery filled was instead covered by convict leasing and prison peonage, ending only when FDR issued a circular ordering prisons to stop the practice because we were about to enter WW2 and it made us look like the bad guys. To replace the cheap labor of convict leasing, prisons instead became factories. Prisoners are technically paid now: they dont have access to the money, and it only goes towards paying bail as well as other expenses, but they are technically being paid for their work. Therefore, it's not slavery! ๐Ÿค”

This is the pragmatic reason why prisons exist: because slavery is illegal. We made up the moral reasoning because deep down we know it's wrong. Back in the pre-civil-war era, we also had justifications for why slavery was good: the slaves were incapable of making moral decisions, we were civilizing a barbarous people, etc etc. It was bullshit then, and it's still bullshit now.

I'm not sure what Cathode Ray Tubes have to do with any of this.

I frankly have no fucking clue what Bob thinks the vampire nuns were, but the Lasombra are deeply connected to the Catholic Church as well as organized religion as a whole. Many Lasombra can be found on the ocean floor, since the best place for a vampire who is one with the dark is a place the sun has never touched.

The Lasombra are a main part of the Sabbat, which is a fascist faction which pretends to be anarchist and egalitarian to potential recruits. Their powers include things like dominating the weak-willed, sculpting darkness, and the more powerful ones can teleport from one shadow to another

Poor guy. He was really doing his best to figure out what the fuck is going on. I bet if he met a real ghost who could fill him in on what's actually going on, his brain would melt.

There's hope for Luigi then!

Yeah, actually. This is mostly because his decades of consistent integrity has earned him a cult-like fanbase of rabid superfans. Don't get me wrong, he's earned it, but I've met a suprising amount of fans of his IRL who seemed totally ready to throw hands with me after I made the mistake of saying that AOC might be a decent successor to him. A fanbase like that means money. Not anywhere near as much as his peers, of course, but combine the money from rabid supporters with the fact that word of mouth is the best kind of marketing and you get a very affordable campaign.

Also, the fact he's not playing the game his peers are means he doesn't have the lifestyle inflation his peers suffer. He seems to live cheaply.

He's been fighting his entire career for specifically universal healthcare. The other democrats are terrified of him.

My understanding is that the reason they're terrified of him is that he's not playing the same game as the rest of them. The career track for a Democrat on the national level goes something like this:

  1. Have rich parents to fund your first campaign, or a politician dad with a recognizable last name.
  2. Get funding for future campaigns through corporate lobbyists.
  3. Be a fence-sitter so you never have to pass actual legislation and risk offending your corporate backers
  4. When you get tired of politics, retire and become a lobbyist.

Bernie is doing none of that. He is as grassroots as grassroots gets. His campaigns are crowdfunded. People vote for him because he has repeatedly proven that he is honest and has integrity. If he ever gets his way, they can be sure their corporate backers will run for the Republicans as fast as they can, and then they won't be able to have that cushy retirement as a lobbyist! In contrast, Bernie is only beholden to the voters who he represents, so his game is all about performing honesty and integrity constantly for the rest of his life. He doesn't get to retire. He's going to die on Capitol Hill.

My point is, there are adults older than me who have never lived in a time where the internet wasn't a thing

I was born six months before Google was founded. I am now 25.

The way i see it, I went from 2018 to 2021 with no real friends. Sure, I had an irl ttrpg group, but I felt more lonely around them than when I was actually alone.

Yeah, they specifically cited not liking that blahaj.zone's policy that mods (and users) should respect neopronouns, no matter how insane they sound. The idea is that if they're a troll, this deals with the problem pretty effectively since nobody wants to be a streaker in a nudist colony, and it also lets the occasional person who actually wants their pronouns to be attack/helicopter to not get bullied for looking like a troll. Point is, the 196 mods thought this was a bad idea. They also didn't like that Ada required them to have a blahaj.zone account to deal with federation issues.
