I've done it a few times but I'm a coward and only play A1.
One of the daftest people I ever met managed to beat 3 of us at once at chess. Would routinely kick my ass every time and it wasn't even close.

Ascension 1. Once you beat the game there's 20 levels to climb through, each adding an extra challenge. A1 adds more elite enemies.
It's widely regarded as the easiest mode to play on, because more elites means more relics, more easy to snowball a strong setup.
