The bridges have always been open source. The clients were forked from element (which is open source) until recently when the Android app was rebuilt; the clients are not planned to be open source.

multiple reports on Discord, Matrix, and Telegram, seem to suggest that, without any notice, Apple is lifting the hardware bans which had been applied to Apple users who had used their Macs and Apple IDs with Beeper

Actually Google Messages extends beyond the universal profile. If you check the current spec, there is no encryption nor reactions, yet Google messages has them. Apple Messages won’t for RCS.
