I liked this take on OMB's fork in the road email from a former venture capitalist and former US Ambassador. In his opening paragraph, he argues that ..."One line in particular [ from the email ] ... reveals a staggering ignorance of the essential work performed by those in government. It is not only offensive but also demonstrably false."

ACTIVE Advantage Membership - Scam (www.consumerfinance.gov)

We were reviewing our credit card bills this month and noticed a suspicious charge from ACT*ACTIVE-NETWORK for $99.

We did a little research and traced it back to a race my wife signed up for a race in 2021 - they must have been using these ActiveNetwork jerks as their registration and payment backend. Apparently - somewhere in their check-out/payment flow you get signed up for a membership plan if you're not paying attention, and they've been tricking enough people with this scam that they've gotten themselves sued by the state of Texas and the CFPB, with I'm sure more on the way.

Be careful out there when you're registering for events! Even if you're careful and you end up in this boat - follow these steps:

  • Go to https://www.active.com/; use the password reset link if you don't remember your password.
  • Go to My Profile > Advantage
  • At the bottom right, under the list of "benefits" you will see a "CANCEL MY MEMBERSHIP" link tiny letters.

Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late, ah, I use the side door–that way Lumberg can’t see me, heh–after that I sorta space out for an hour. I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I’m working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch too. I’d say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.

Apple's FindMy network is launching in South Korea in Spring of 2025, which will allow Apple users to locate their devices running MacOS and iOS, as well as use precision finding to track items with AirTags on them.

T-mobile home internet in northern Virginia, just across the river from Washington DC.

50 USD a month for about 400Mbps down/20Mbps up. For me it was a much better deal FIOS or Comcast and the service is generally pretty good, but in my location it meant dealing with with latency that spikes up to 80+ ms every now and again.

Refurb 13” 2020 M1 MacBook Pro. Best computer I’ve ever owned - it’s been my daily driver for two years and it’s been a joy to use every day.
