The "right" aren't right though, they're wrong. They should be called "far-wrong" instead of "far-right", imo, as their stances on many things show.

dumb sentence without any meaning or content, except to make people shut up when they actually have something to say

[–] [email protected] 4 points 19 hours ago

yeah but if you give out civilized healthcare, how will you bully your people into working hard so they don't end up in the trench abandoned?

Anytime I talk about these things to folks outside the US, it’s always some reply about “your country chose this!” And how, regardless of how I voted, I still somehow let this happen. It’s super frustrating and disheartening.

The way i see it, the current disasters unfolding were predictable as far back as the 1960s. Unhinged greed is a disease, and letting it run free and calling it "progress", "economic liberalism", and channeling it to make it your main way of doing economy, is a disease. What's angering me personally is that it seems to me that Americans are so extremely short-sighted, that as long as it worked for them, everything was ok in their eyes, and now that they're hitting the wall, they suddenly want to get off the vehicle. Good planning takes a long time, and even if we wanted to help you, we couldn't, because there's not enough preparation time.

Now, it is the cool thing to be super anti-American.

This isn't news. Different than what americans might think, they're not necessarily looked at as the "big heroes" everywhere. There's a lot of countries who have made a lot of bad experiences because of them, and really, the USA isn't popular, on average, world-wide.

Yes, this is what NATO is for. It is an alliance meant to prevent fascism from taking hold. Just because it’s only ever been used in non member countries doesn’t mean it can’t be used on us, especially if Trump continues to threaten allies. Talking about this leading to WWIII is a strawman argument. You don’t know that will happen and it is not a good reason to not be asking for help from our allies. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/NATO

The way i see it, America has gone very angry at anyone in the past who was accused of "interfering with American internal politics" for many years. That is why nobody wants to meddle in American internal politics anymore.

It is, in some sense, the fate of the tiger. When you're a gazelle or zebra, and you're sick, you can hope at least that a Tiger will come by and eat you, thus shortening your suffering. When you are the tiger, there's nobody predating you, and if you fall sick, it could take a very long time before you die.

The problem isn’t the boarder!!!

I agree with you on that. Unfortunately, it's more complicated than that. Owning guns doesn't necessarily lead to bad things happening, but it often does, because people are mentally stressed and exhausted. The problem is the poor living conditions many people are forced to live under. What would really help is some sort of social welfare. But i guess, the US has a lot of work to do before it gets there.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

the government can go into unlimited debt if it is willing to cause a hyperinflation at some point later in the future to eliminate all of that debt.

[–] [email protected] -2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

we need more working powers to keep our wealth and our standard of living up. obviously, as things are crumbling around us, this means we don't put in enough effort to maintain things, and more hands would help.

that is a false thought. The labor market is regulated by supply and demand. That means, fewer workers lead to higher wages and a higher quality of life. It might seem paradoxical, but having a smaller workforce means people in the country will be able to afford more stuff.

That is especially important as people discuss the birth-rate, and immigration, in all countries, also in the US and in Europe. People say things such as "women have 1.6 children on average, which means our population is declining, and obviously that is the reason why our quality-of-life seems to be going down as well". However, the opposite is true. As automation takes over and well-paying (and meaningful) jobs are eroded, having fewer people around doing all the work actually drives wages up, and leads to an improved quality-of-life.

and now I’m imagining being required to take an exam to join a subreddit. Stupid idea but it would probably restore that sort of tone.

I think it's because some people are naturally calm and considerate, instead of seeking rage-bait.

I think this isn't learned behavior, or something you can change through education/exams. This is just how some people are. I guess it has something to do with being intellectual/Taoist/gnostic, whatever you call it. I think this is just because a lot of people here are technically inclined, have AuDHD, or something similar.

Apart from that, i guess lots of ragebait, advertisement, and "preferring user numbers over quality content" is why reddit (and many other platforms) are taking this course. Let's make sure that the Fediverse stays a place that is ad-free, and turn rage-bait to a minimum.

I think, maybe we could meaningfully rebrand Lemmy to Feddit? And change the direction accordingly (away from politics/tankie views, and towards general-purpose, meme content)? Maybe that would be a solid and sound approach to social media.

what would happen irl

This is not a personal issue.

Real wages have gone down 50% since the 1970s. One person used to provide enough for a family, now typically both partners go to work and it's still "just enough".

In the conservative 1960s, the woman's rights movement would have never succeeded if it wasn't backed by the media (big news), and we all know they're owned by the rich. So what does the rich gain by making women go to work?

The labor market is a free market. It is regulated by supply and demand. If there's higher supply in workers, wages go down. I'm worried that the women's rights movement was allowed by the rich to increase supply of workers and bring down the wages.

This is not intended as "how to grow all your food you ever need at home".

It merely provides the vegetables.

You still have to get your grains (and therefore the majority of your calories) from somewhere else.

Hey there ;-)

These are my own thoughts about the US-China PV trade tariffs.

My goal is to point out how solar installations are a good thing. And US should lower tariffs on PV imports.

Here are my points:

  • National security:

It has been argued that by relying on Chinese solar panel imports, the US makes itself dependent on China in a critical part of the economy.

I disagree with this point of view:

Solar panels are a very durable product, and once installed, can last easily for 20+ years. There is no urgent, or immediate need to replace them, in case a US-China war breaks out. Therefore, the US does not make itself more dependent on China energy-wise by importing solar panels.

Actually, quite the opposite is the case IMO:

In case WW3 breaks out (let's hope not but what if), then the US would be vulnerable by being dependent on fossil fuel imports that have to be shipped daily, or at least, regularly. By installing solar panels, they do no longer depend on recurring, regular imports. (Because solar panels only have to be imported once, not regularly).

  • Economic arguments:

It is argued that by fostering the domestic solar panel production capability within the US, that could drastically make the domestic economy grow. It has been argued that instating tariffs on Chinese solar panel imports, and using the so-collected tariff money to subsidize the domestic solar panel market, would foster that goal.

I want to show that, while this is true, also the opposite is true:

Lowering tariffs has the consequence of providing even cheaper energy to the domestic economy, thus making all production (and therefore virtually every product in the market) cheaper, which stimulates the economy and increases the economy overall (price elasticity).

So we have to compare the economic benefit of producing solar panels domestically, against the economic boost that cheaper energy provides. I would say (due to my gut feeling) that the second clearly outweighs the first, so the economy actually profits in total, if solar panel tariffs are dropped, because energy becomes cheaper and stimulates the economy.

Edit:

To the downvoter(s), please explain why you disagree. Or is it just not the appropriate place to discuss these things? If so, where would be a better place?
