Do you think this sort of script could be integrated within apps to get automatics redirection to communities so that they open directly in the app rather than redirecting to the original instance and opening in browser?

Definitely agree that more browser diversification is needed beyond forks of existing projects.

Browsers nowadays almost start to approach the complexity of an OS with sandboxed tabs, JavaScript engine and plugin engine. We should've never allowed google to get so much into our lives.

Edit: forgot the HTML and CSS interpreters and then there's how it all interacts, and there might still be parts that I'm not familiar with.

IRC was fun, then people chose corporate poisoned simplicity (AOL, MSN) and that spelt the doom for protocols, until now.

That's also a fair point, although I hope most serious instances only consider defederating from another instance as a last resort.
