How is the puppy?

As for interoperability between services… Monetization of surveillance data. The social media companies are Ad companies, and they make their money surveilling people and selling access. It’s harder to build an accurate model of a person when only pieces of data is available, and they need to have more data then the other Ad tech companies they’re competing with.

Project much?

I’ll play though.

Amanduh being a humorless chore. 😁

Matrix servers keep a copy of any remote room an account on the server has joined, and it’s possible to recreate a room from the copies held on different servers. There are more details I don’t remember, but at a high level that’s how it’s distributed.

Storing messages of remote rooms in addition to local rooms is why people complain about the storage requirements of Matrix servers. They don’t realize it’s distributed.

Yeah, it’s a “middleweight” DE.

LXDE, LXQT, Openbox, i3, Sway, FVWM. That sort of thing.

You wouldn’t say that if you knew regex. 😆

Is LXQT or LXDE too modern for them?

Who is hating Xfce? Besides the “lightweight” DE crowd.

The project doesn’t have a lot resources, so it’s behind on things. They do great work for what they have though.

Yeah, Moxie has openly shot down the idea of adding federation to Signal, and I’ve never heard them claim Signal was decentralized.

Matrix is federated, distributed, and decentralized.

XMPP is federated and decentralized.

What if you do love regex? 🥺

Lots of code repos. Especially repos for programming languages, compilers, and Git.

Where are those two in the picture? Or are they taking the picture? 🤔

Pinkish house gecko on white stucco wall.

The house geckos were pretty chill little house guests.

Does anyone have USB-C dock recommends?

I have a Thinkpad P1 gen 4 running Fedora I’m going to be using as my desktop replacement, and I’m looking for a Linux friendly dock.

I don’t need the dock to do much. Ideally, it could drive 2x 4K DisplayPort displays, have a 2.5Gb+ Ethernet port, and a couple USB-A ports, but 2x 2K DisplayPort and 1GbE work too.

Preferred price is <$150.

Any opinions on an IM solution to send notifications to?

Something which can show push notifications on my phone would be ideal.

This is for my personal stuff which isn't critical or public. I would like E2EE if for no other reason then why not.

Top options:

  • Matrix
  • XMPP

Middle:

  • Jami (No API?)
  • Zulip (no EE2E)
  • Google Chat (no EE2E?, dealing with Google APIs)

No:

  • Briar (no iOS client)
  • Signal (no API)
  • Session (no API)
  • Whatsapp (API cost)
  • Threema (cost)
  • Wire (bot API in beta, cost?)
  • Telegram (sus)
  • Slack
