In February of 1977, Carl and Veronica Richter were heading home from a work party that ran late. Carl had just been promoted to a new regional position for the toy company he worked at. To save time, they decided that they were going to take the interstate instead of the usually, icier back roads.
It had been an especially wet winter in northern Ohio so they decided that it was probably going to be a little more dangerous, too. They would only need to drive on the interstate for about 10 miles. Since it was late, there was hardly any traffic.
They were quite surprised when they pulled up and found that the road ahead had a blockade of black vehicles. Men in suits were standing around talking to one another and a couple of them seemed to be having an intense conversation with a man in a police uniform.
A couple of the suits came over to talk to Carl and his wife. Carl said he rolled down the window to his car and the man in the suit told him that the interstate was closed as a matter of public safety. Carl asked the man who he worked for, but the man was evasive, telling Carl that they needed to turn around and find a different route.
They drove home on the back route, the strange traffic blockade standing out in their conversation but neither Carl nor Veronica could figure out why they had shut the roads down like that so late. A few weeks later, there was something in their local paper that suggested an answer to their questions.
A few miles north of where the road had been shutdown, a farmer reported a strange event as his farm. He said that he thought something exploded in his field shortly before his animals all feel completely silent. Before he could even go investigate, these men in suits forced him and his family back inside their house and wouldn't let them leave for hours.
He said by the time he was able to check on his property, he couldn't find anything but a spot where it looked like something had been buried. He dug it up and couldn't find anything but wants to know which government agency he could file a complaint for as they violated his rights.
