Lets fight stupid with stupid and rename the Alaskan Highway!

I think this is spoken from the point of view of an American? Canada can't nationalize American companies...

Canada could however fund its own federal credit system to compete and add a big fat tariff on MC and Visa tx's if they wanted to force people to adopt it rapidly.

Wow... That BCCDC vaccination coverage chart linked to in the article is honestly disappointing. I did not realize parents here were this stupid these days. I mean, you hear about antivax misinformation taking hold in places like Kentucky and Alberta, but come on BC parents. Do better. Snap out of the f*cebook conspiracy brainwashing.

Literally the whole province is like this, not just the 2 (conservative) northern regions singled out in the article. The trend in the data holds across all the regions and all are dangerously below herd immunity? I feel like thetyee likes to throw a bit of bias where it is convenient for them. Just something to keep in mind folks, I like thetyee too! But its important to recognize the biases in the media we read.

The province-wide avg for measles coverage age 7 is 72.4 in 2023. For comparison in 2013 it was 90.9. Downward trend holds for all regions, with the 2 northern regions singled out having slightly lower coverage to begin with and end with.

Side note: why is it that gov't sites that are clearly being updated never even have frigging https setup or basic mobile RWD? I had to turn on desktop mode just to view their website properly 🤦‍♂️

Wow, love that they went noJS, ad and tracking free recently too!

So, I decided to take a leap of faith. The patrons got us almost all the way there, so let's remove the ads from the website and go for it. Not only that, but let's remove the cookies, tracking scripts, and every scrap of Javascript from the site—just pure text and images.

Glad they are only targeting west coast states with the ad campaign so that hopefully newcomers have similar ideals to BC already.

In other words, glad they aren't recruiting in Florida.

I find their oat milk just does not foam worth a damn though unfortunately for us cappuccino and caffè latte lovers

Its too expensive to eat these days no matter where you shop, so I just switched to absorbing sunlight for energy instead 🌻

Thanks Galen Weston 🙄

Who are some of your favourite Canadian authors? Remember to share the author's website if available, instead of an Amazon link. Your local library may have a lot of Canadian books too!

I saw a Silverwing book by Kenneth Oppel at a clearance sale and that took me on a nostalgia train. Looked him up and I didn't realize he's quite a prolific Canadian author!

Not sure if its all YA/easy reading, but that's what I grew up with. Both the Silverwing series and Airborn are top notch for that sorta thing and still hold up well for a re-read occassionally.

Makita is good bang for your buck and Japanese owned. You can even get some cool made in Japan drills online that work with our batteries.

KMS tools is a great local store to buy tools from any brand, often have good sales.

Holy cow I just recommended them to someone the other day, I need to cancel that real quick.

Edit: Danielle Smith is a wretched traitor to Canada bought and paid for. Already hated her, but her little Mar-a-lago bribe vacation should be grounds for treason.

Unnecessary BackgroundWell I've begun shopping for a reasonably-priced concert ukulele in anticipation of completing Bernadette Teaches Music's #30dayUKEchallenge. I'm already finding my little soprano (that I bought without research) to be a bit uncomfortably small. After watching a size comparison, I suppose I should have started with a concert instead. But, it will be a good excuse to reward myself for finally sticking with an instrument for an entire program after years of on and off interest. (Recently I've been finding (micro)rewarding progress is helpful with ADHD)

I suppose I should have expected most of the major brands to be USA based since Hawaii was colonized afterall.

Here's a list of Non-USA owned brands that I found in a preliminary search.

  • Ibanez

    • Country of Manufacture: I spy Made in China on all 3 uke models
    • Country of Ownership: Japan
  • Aria

    • Country of Manufacture: China and Indonesia, Japan for platinum line (no ukes)
    • Country of Ownership: Japan
  • Cordoba

    • Country of Manufacture: China
    • Country of Ownership: ~~Spain~~ Japan, owned by Yamaha now
  • Your Local Luthier

    • Country of Manufacture: Canada
    • Country of Ownership: Canada
    • Edit: Added this in for those who can afford it/are skilled enough to justify a handmade one!

Disclaimer: Always check the CoM for a specific model you are interested in if you want to make sure.

Would love suggestions for other quality brands too if you know of any others!

Just a little reminder.

Pisses me off to no end that they use the Canadian identity for marketing when they sold out decades ago.

Also their coffee and food has been shit for a long time too, coincidence? I think not.

I just wanted to shout out Egli Farm. I found them while doing my Christmas shopping this year and everything my partner and I have gotten has been great quality at fair prices. The sheepskin bucket hat was a big hit at Christmas since it enables year round bucket-hattery in Canada lol

They have hundreds of Made in Canada wool and sheepskin products including clothing, footwear, homegoods, raw wool and sheepskin supplies, etc. Seems like they contract some of the more processing-intense type products out to Stanfields but they're in Canada too 🤙

Family-owned in Ontario since 1952!

P.S. if you end up ordering something leave a note on the order suggesting they switch to a .ca TLD so its easier for people tell they're Canadian

I'm running out of spooky stories. Help me out, what are some of your favourite spooky story podcasts?

I like narrative story style podcasts and dislike the style where there are multiple people bantering off-topic before discussing a spooky topic.
