American corporations like Facebook, Google, and Amazon make billions from weaponizing your private data. And you don't even have to be using their products for them to steal from you!

Rob them of that option by blocking ads and trackers.

Starve these bastards of your data, and you'll kill their revenue.

Who are some of your favourite Canadian authors? Remember to share the author's website if available, instead of an Amazon link. Your local library may have a lot of Canadian books too!

I saw a Silverwing book by Kenneth Oppel at a clearance sale and that took me on a nostalgia train. Looked him up and I didn't realize he's quite a prolific Canadian author!

Not sure if its all YA/easy reading, but that's what I grew up with. Both the Silverwing series and Airborn are top notch for that sorta thing and still hold up well for a re-read occassionally.

This is a great alternative to Apple / Google maps for public transit takers. Generally speaking their data is a lot better for service issues, rerouted lines, and the actual time of arrival for transit vehicles. Many transit authorities in Canada actually offer the premium subscription for this app, for free, to frequent riders AND the app is developed locally (in Québec)

If you're just looking for general maps however I highly suggest Open Street Map, or the Organic Maps app on Android (which uses OSM data). While they aren't explicitly Canadian, they get you away from American tech conglomerates and give back ownership of data to you, the user!

Amazon is officially dead to me, I had uninstalled all the apps a little while ago and deleted my email address today. It however hit me that I had not signed out of the webpage, so instead of just signing out I deleted my account and wow did it feel good saying I have issues with amazon when deleting the account and being signed out.

I'm looking for a new cordless power drill. Are there any brands you'd recommend?

I am transferring all of my email address; a few years back it took me months to figure out what was all going to my gmail account that was used signing up for stuff even though there was some web app I used, I was going to move away from the Google as much as possible, minus search and YouTube. Several months ago I moved away from Google search, and was stuck with YouTube as there is no real competition to it, that my favourite channels use, so I am stuck with it.

So iCloud’s hide my email was the replacement for Gmail, it was a lot easier to cancel junk mail by being able to just turn off email addresses that started spamming me. Come now to the buy Canadian stuff I am turning off all my hide my email addresses and moving some to proton pass, most of the emails so far I can just delete but many I have to go to the webpage and change the address. It is hard work and I have given myself a deadline of the end of the month when my iCloud subscription is done and dusted. Only 152 email addresses left!

Dilemma about some brands. (self.buycanadian)

I have s dilemma when it comes to some brands.

For example Kraft or Scott paper are American companies. That means any profits go to the U.S.

However, their products are manufactured in Canada with canadian resources. Therefore helping the local economy and creating jobs.

Should we buy from them or no?

I world lean towards no, because in the end it profits americans. Especially when there are local alternatives for things like peanut butter, Cheez Whiz, and it's not like mac n cheese is really that hard to make. There are also local paper brands. But I'm still worried this could end in job losses and have an impact on the economy.

EDIT: I should also add that we're still being screwed royally by Canadian corporations still, like our large grocery chains, telecom and others. I think it's still worth to boycott them. That means we really need to focus on the very local businesses. They may cost more, but I think in the end we're definitely all going to be winners from doing that.

Jacked-Up Jill Coffee (www.jackedupjill.com)

Everyone and their dog has a Canadian coffee they love and post here it seems but I'd argue Jacked-Up Jill is the best one. Manitoba roasted and owned, supports women's initiatives in MB. The owner travelled to the places she sources her beans from and buys from co-ops, etc. She has been and usually is in direct contact with the sources of her beans so she can stand behind her product personally.

Not sure if this counts as the material is sourced from overseas but it's Winnipeg owned and operated. Their Luxe line is the most comfortable clothing I own. They also take part in social and local initiatives.

I have broad shoulders and I find their Luxe clothing just fits better than the cheap off the rack stuff. On the zip and the long-sleeve I did have to size up from an xl to xxl

Didn’t have many subscriptions (all US are cancelled) and was mostly eating Canadian food already. Swapping now what else is left … what now? I am so mad at the USA I need something else to take my anger out on.

So as we're all trying to cut America out of our lives at this instance, one of my soft spots is YouTube. I spend likely too much time there following different creators.

I know there are some peertube instances that exist, however looking through them they all seem very very specific to their niche. Does anyone know of a PeerTube instance that is both Canadian and 'General' content?

Online PC parts (i.imgur.com)

I hope avoiding Amazon fits this community rules?

I need a few bits to resurrect an old PC. My Amazon cart is $68 with shipping - we're going to cancel Prime, but my wife is still working on downloading all her photos. Best I can do elsewhere is near double this PLUS shipping from 3 different suppliers and 2 of the suppliers are on eBay, which is also a US company.

I moved to Canada a few years ago from Australia where I had pccasegear, scorptec and others. It seems Canadians have become reliant on the US market and Amazon and we now have no competitive local retailers for this type of thing?

Tough Duck is a Canadian company based out of Winnipeg.

Unpopular opinion, but Carhartts have the most inaccurate, wildly inconsistent sizing out of possibly any clothing company. The same size of the same model between two different pairs of Carhartt pants can be either way too big or way too small.

For bonus points, ask your local stores to start stocking Tough Duck.

It is also a certified B Corp
