Because it's not about "knowing more", it's about being afraid of change, and in close relation to that, being afraid of losing control and having agency in that change, and/or having to confront personal flaws in themselves or their beliefs.

It's why such discussions often get so vitriolic, as criticisms or pushback on proposed ideas are received as personal attacks, and this division drives clicks and views, aka profit thanks to this cancer we call the ad economy. Toss in religion and things become existential (for some).

Doesn't help that there's a monetary incentive to fuel division, even before you consider any geopolitical/realpolitik/propaganda stuff.
