I ask this question because many anti-natalist points have in the last years gone mainstream and this includes the view that it’s unethical to bring a child into our current messed up world. I myself have had to battle with this view because me and my partner have wanted children since we were children ourselves and being challenged on that from a ethical perspective have forced us to really think about it closely.

When I think of my own birth I view of it as a very positive thing. I really can’t say life has been perfect or without troubles but I mostly enjoy life as it is both today and when I was younger, even with everything going on. So would I have chosen to be birthed again? I absolutely would! However this does not support myself having children because this could only rectify my own parents decision to have me. While I do know I have enjoyed my own life I can’t know in advance if my future children will enjoy life. The question is, will my own children born in the 2020s have liked to have been born?

This is of course an impossible question to answer since it requires predicting the future. I think 2015 was better than 2025. But how will 2035 be? How about 2100? My potential children will live so far into the future it’s incredibly hard to know if the world will be good or bad at the end, or even the middle of their lives. However if a life is not worth living it must be an absolutely horrific and torterous experience. Is that really where we are headed? Is it really gonna get THAT bad? Well that depends on how optimistic/pessimistic you are. No one actually knows what it is gonna be like.

There is one point however that I think is not discussed enough and that is about who are the ones having children? No this is not about the immigrants or muslims or whatever you have heard from the far right in regards to this. No this is about the fact that today if you are conservative, without a college degree and highly religious then you’re much more likely to have children. If all of us liberal and educated folks stop having kids what will the world look like? According to current projections the US will be majority amish by 2233. Is that the future we want? If conservatives and especially ultra-conservatives are the only ones having children then the liberal movement will have to be fighting an uphill battle if their only members are “converts” from those brought up in conservative households. That can’t end well can it? If I manage to raise reasonable and well brought up people, then that will improve the life quality of other people as well wouldn't it? But at the same time I can't expect my children to become future politicians who will save our decaying world. What are you all's thoughts about this?

I've been thinking about this a lot recently. I'm sure a lot of you have. For my part, I've been finally writing down my political experience, what I saw, etc...in a way that I think might be able to move some people on the right. But I also agree with this post. People always talk/write, etc...and rarely actually take action.

So, with that in mind, can we talk about what that looks like? Very specifically?

I suppose I'm hoping we can go a step beyond "go protest," having unanimously agreed that we should all be out en masse to make it clear we're pissed about...well...kinda everything.

But this is a fairly radical bunch. So, what do you all know about this? What concrete advice/tips/plans/ideas can we dumbass individual Americans learn from historic examples, political movements, etc...? Indeed, one of those questions might be: is this even the place to talk about this? If not, where? Does that already exist somewhere in the aether out there? Communications is always an interesting to me (I've wondered whether something like LoRa could be useful to setup in my area).

If I want to start a group locally, are there things I should think about? Practical tips beyond "talk to everyone you know?" Books to read? Etc...? Even if you get a group, it's easy for it to mean nothing. How do you make it not mean nothing?

A few weeks ago i was walking my dog around 11pm, and a driver jokingly did a brake torque as we were crossing the street. He was maybe 3 feet away from us.

After yelling at each other, he threatened to kill me and my dog the next time he saw us. As I pulled my camera he peeled out and hurled a racial comment my way. Sadly, there was so much movement i couldnt get the plate, and i didnt get anything that happened before that on camera.

So I got a body cam to wear for all my walks. Unfortunately, this is not the only time people have been racist and threatened my life so I’m just tired of it and hoping it might encourage people to behave. Feels lame, but it does provide some comfort. Does anyone else do the same?

Its basically like a cloud storage, and your local storage (your brain) gets wiped every loop. You can edit this file any time you want using your brain (you can be tied up and it still works). 1024 Bytes is all you get. Yes you read that right: BYTES, not KB, MB, or GB: 1024 BYTES

Lets just say, for this example: The loop is 7 days form a Monday 6 AM to the next Monday 5:59 AM.

How do you best use these 1024 Bytes to your advantage?

How would your strategy be different if every human on Earth also gets the same 1024 Bytes "memory buffer"?

I can't access CNN, BBC, CBSNEWS, and others. Seems to persist across multiple devices and others in household also having issue.

Anyone else?

Just seems weird that I'm not seeing any news about it. Is it likely connected to the Microsoft Outlook issue? I just don't see how?

I had this effectively a shower thought idea - why don't we have ceramic 3d printing?

Let me clarify - before posting, I looked it up, and I could not find exactly what I was looking for. There are already commercial offereings for Clay 3D printing, but that is not forming the ceramic in situ, we are depositing what is effectively ceramic in a solvent, and drying it. What I was thinking was making the ceramic on site.

Here is a example setup

  • Imagine a regular polymer 3D printing setup

  • imagine instead of filament, we have a tank of Ca(OH)~2~ (calcium hydroxide, or slaked lime) (not necessarily just this, but for example, consider this combination)

  • imagine we instead of droping a full thread like layer of semi-solid polymer, we form a trail of really tiny water drops

  • we sprinkle in Ca(OH)~2~ onto the drops (or this step can be skipped if we can pre mix it with water, and then somehow figure how to deposit really tiny drops of what is effectively a very strong base

  • now we let CO~2~ in, and form CaCO~3~

  • deposit a layer to fill voids in this layer (we dropped a non continous strings of drops earlier)

  • evaporate remainning water

  • repeat this step until this layer is complete.

  • repeat process for next layer

Now I can think of many problems here

  • how to handle very strong base - maybe a tip of refractory alloys, or something like Inconnel (or Ni Cr alloys in general), or ceramic (maybe alumina) coated metal (probably cheapest, but hard to make)

  • how to control solidification - we are effectively doing a solidification reaction, and growth of crystal would largely be dependant on the crystal facettes, and we would not be able to have any sharp angles. Also, we would not be able to have a very small width with this.

  • surface tension of water will not allow to easily create uniform small dots - only thing I can think of is using something mechanical to hit the water droplets at tips to effectively launch tiny droplets. (Imagine shuriken (stars or blades) breaking droplet, and water landing) - still we would not have control

  • how to control solidification rate in exothermic process - maybe easy, but we would need something like fans or coolant, otherwise we would form big drops at a spot due increased nucleation rate

  • how to introduce CO~2~ fast enough - we would have to have a very strong CO~2~ environment, somehow not let it solidify at tip. Also this reaction is very slow (maybe that is only the case at bulk solidification). Maybe the whole process would be very slow

Does this process already exist? If it does - any resources related to it would be helpful. If not, Why? Is it because we have not been able to solve the issues I listed, something I did not list? Would this be practical (economically)? I can definitely see both artistic and engineering use cases, and both of those can allow some big budgets.

I know chemistry mixing in parallel systems is a nono. Is LiFeMgPO4 that different from LiFePO4 that this would be an issue?

You, as the chosen one, will have to save the world from "the bad guys". Would you succeed or fail? Or join the dark side? Would you try so hard that you become corrupted by evil?

My answer: I'd fail and the universe is fucked because I'm just a pile of sadness. 😓

I wish to understand what elements or aspects of the design of modern websites the end users are annoyed from. Though you are free to express your personal opinions, it would be even more insightful if you could provide objective criticism and suggestions for alternative implementations so that I may incorporate the same in my current and future projects to make them as user friendly as possible.

Some criticisms I have encountered a while back include:

  • Switches being basically checkboxes with more ambiguous active state
  • Scrolling animations that prohibit user from linearly scrolling through the page

Make sure that the opinion is not

  • Related to business/legal matters e.g. Cookie consent notices, ad banners etc.
  • Too vague e.g. Poor website layout
  • Highlighting objectively bad practices e.g. Lack of accessibility features

I recognise I could have followed a design system for this question, but I want to understand the situation from the perspective of the end users to see if they have a differing view on what a convenient user experience should be like.

There's a constant influx of new communities with softcore sexualized characters, especially anime girls, that I could do without.
I don't mind anime and manga in general, so I would rather not block the instances that specialize in it, but blocking softcore communities one by one seems be a never ending task.
I also think it may be off-putting for new members.

Hello friends,

(Fluff) Thank you for all the replies to my previous post. I hope you'll excuse me for asking an unpleasant question, but it was to lead into this next one. (Fluff over)

(Question) To my global human allies and to my fellow inhabitants of the land of fiefdom, what is your breaking point?

At what point does the enshitification, or the grift, or the lies, or the hate, or the multitude of grievances thrust upon us become too much? What do you do when it all becomes too bleak to bear? (Question over)

For those of us planning protest I would advise you to bring PPE (safety goggles, basic first aid, etc.) Try not to bring your phone, and if you must record try a dedicated camera/camcorder. Wear common, ambiguous clothing free of branding. Wear clothing that does not allow your body type to be profiled. Let those who know you well, and that you trust know where you're going and have a plan in case you're injured or incarcerated. Try, if possible, to have an ingress/egress plan that does not involve a registered vehicle. This is not a comprehensive list, but it's what I can think of off the top of my head?

For those of us planning less civil means of protest, I cannot help you on this forum.

For those of us not in the position to take action, direct or indirect, please advocate and support those who can.

Most importantly, know that you are not alone. Foster community, identify the leaders among us, identify your goals and plan to achieve them.

Thank you, again, for you time

Why does it feel that the evil sides globally are winning. Even evil people are winning. Why?

A recent event led me to fact check something that I thought must be untrue, which is that Ukraine conscripts people into the military against their will, including making those people that had previously fulfilled their obligations return to the battlefield.

Moreso, when browsing X recently I saw bunch of videos being posted of what claimed were police forcing people into vans to go fight in Ukraine. The police were beating these people in the process. Now, it is possible that some of this content is propaganda, but I did want to find out if Ukraine forces conscription.

It appears that it is true:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscription_in_Ukraine

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/lacking-manpower-ukraine-resorts-to-harsh-means-to-force-draft-dodgers-into-combat

I am very much against conscription. I still support Ukraine's independence, but the fact that they are forcing people to fight through beatings, arrests, etc. is sickening to me and makes me lose respect for Zelensky. According to an estimate by Ukrainian commanders, 50% to 70% of Ukrainian conscripts are killed or wounded in their first few days in combat on some areas of the front.

What are others thoughts on this?

tldr; Basically what I'm looking for is the digital way of selling a dvd, which was the previous way we had to make some extra money for the club.

We've created a few videos from a gymnastics show for kids and we're looking to try to use those to get some extra money into the club. We'd prefer not to put the videos on youtube for everyone to see, because obviously not everyone wants that, but is there a simple and preferably automated way to monetize sending/showing the files to people who donate?
