"During its first four weeks, the new United States presidential administration has taken our country on a roller-coaster ride. And we must be prepared for this to continue for the next four years. The historic bond between Canada and the United States has been strained in profound ways. Trust has been broken and will not easily be repaired."

Premier says throne speech, to be delivered Tuesday, will lay out how the province plans to protect residents

When British Columbia's Legislature opens for the first time in nine months on Tuesday, the driving force behind the province's politics and the government's upended agenda will be thousands of kilometres away.

New Lt.-Gov. Wendy Lisogar-Cocchia will deliver a throne speech outlining the NDP government's goals, opening the legislative session against the backdrop of economic uncertainty and the looming threat of whopping tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump.

The speech will lay out the NDP government's "plan to defend British Columbians in these uncertain times and secure a brighter future for everyone who calls this place home," said B.C. Premier David Eby in a Family Day statement on Monday.

This is a pretty cool event. $100 for basic, $150 for VIP. We really enjoyed it last year.

The article itself is important because it is fucked up that BCUP kept taking donations long after they dropped out and the election was over, but it had a very interesting piece of information about the election overall that is buried in it.

Between Aug. 29 and Dec. 31, the B.C. Conservatives took in just under $3.93 million from 4,534 contributions, while the NDP received just over $3.93 million from 7,439 contributions.

Provincial political contributions in B.C. are capped at about $1,484 in 2025, up from just over $1,450 last year.

It is interesting that with the same limits, and about the same dollar amount donated, the BC conservatives hit $3.93 million with about 3,000 less donors.

Speaks volumes.

Premier says the province will be ready to respond with anti-tariff measures again if needed

B.C. Premier David Eby announced Monday in a late afternoon news conference that B.C. would put a hold on planned retaliatory measures following U.S. President Donald Trump's 30-day pause on his tariff threat earlier in the day.

In the meantime, the premier said the government will continue to explore trade alternatives and work to strengthen the provincial economy.

He said the province will be ready to respond with anti-tariff measures again if need be.

"We've got to prepare for the worst-case scenario even though we hope for the best."

These measures included removing alcohol from "red" or Republican-leaning states from the shelves of provincially-run liquor stores, ordering Crown corporations to avoid contracts with American companies and working with B.C.-based resource companies to divert critical minerals and energy away from the United States and toward other trading partners.

Shelves that held bottles of Kentucky bourbon, Jack Daniels whiskey and Bacardi rum are sitting empty at government-run liquor stores in B.C. Sunday – where bottles of booze have been replaced with signs saying, ‘Buy Canadian Instead.’

The move follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order that imposed 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods.

Premier David Eby, in response, pledged to pull American liquor off the shelves and said provincial stores will stop purchasing it. The premiers of Ontario and Quebec have done the same.

U.S. President Donald Trump will impose 25% tariff on most Canadian imports beginning Tuesday

B.C. Premier David Eby has announced immediate countermeasures in response to incoming U.S. tariffs, saying the province will take action to protect B.C. workers and businesses.

. . .

As an initial response, Eby said he has directed the B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch to immediately stop purchasing American liquor from Republican-led "red states" and remove the top-selling brands from public liquor store shelves.

He also directed the B.C. government and Crown corporations to prioritize Canadian goods and services in procurement decisions.

"The Americans are bigger, but if we don't stand up for ourselves, they will just keep coming back for more," he said.
