The goaltender who suffered a "severe injury" in a fight during a Pacific Junior Hockey League game two weeks ago, leaving him motionless on the ice, is back playing after being medically cleared.

Video of the fight that circulated on social media shows Richmond defenceman Eithan Grishin over top of Paul with his arms around the goaltender's upper body for about 20 seconds. When Grishin lets go, Paul slumps to the ice of Richmond's Minoru Arena.

Neither the PJHL nor officials from either team have released any information about a disciplinary hearing (for Eithan Grishin) into the incident.

Richmond RCMP said no complaints have been filed matching the description of the incident.

I really hope Kuzy is okay. I know he has a bit of a rep, and his play has perhaps never been where we would like it to, but he seems like a good guy and he's very popular in the room.

Hockey Hall of Famer Lanny McDonald suffered a cardiac event Sunday after returning from the NHL's all-star game in Toronto.

The 70-year-old wrote in an Instagram post Monday on the Calgary Flames alumni account that two nurses heading to their own flights at Calgary International Airport helped him when he was in distress.

"It's true that even tough old guys need help sometimes," McDonald said in the post.

In the stress of the moment, McDonald's wife Ardell didn't get the nurses' names.

"We are eternally grateful for their care and action . . . I owe them my life," McDonald said.

The Winnipeg Jets acquired forward Sean Monahan from the Montreal Canadiens on Friday.

The Canadiens received a 2024 first-round pick and a conditional 2027 third-round pick in exchange.

Monahan, 29, ranks third on the Canadiens with 35 points (13 goals, 22 assists) and has appeared in all 49 games this season.

Really pleased to see this. The lack of a true international best-on-best is holding hockey back in my opinion. And the NHL might not get exactly what they want out of it, but I truly thing it's good for the sport in general.

Every season, the story seems to be the same — the Toronto Maple Leafs consistently perform well during the regular season, comfortably keeping themselves in a playoff spot year-round, only to fall short in the playoffs. This season, though, their regular-season success is faltering. They sit in the first wild-card spot, though they were expected to frontline the Atlantic Division again. Their problem? Depth scoring.

General manager Brad Treliving was brought in to pilot the team in May 2023, and his biggest priority was adding what he called “snot” or grit. The narrative was that the Maple Leafs were too “soft” to compete for the Cup and that their lack of grittiness was holding them back from postseason success. After all, hits increase in the playoffs.

Whether or not that’s the case — that grit means postseason success — is beside the point. There’s nothing inherently wrong with gritty players, but those players need to perform on top of their physical play. Skilled grit is a coveted asset in the league, with players like Timo Meier, J.T. Miller, Tom Wilson, and the Tkachuk brothers revered for holding their own physically while providing offensive as well.

That’s where Toronto has gone wrong. The grit they have added and targeted over the past few seasons has been somewhat skillless. Rather than focus on adding depth scoring, regardless of physicality, the team has focused far too much on the latter, and it has cost them dearly.

The league carried out its own investigation into the allegations, but has yet to release its findings. Bettman said that once the criminal investigation was over the league would respond appropriately.

“They’re all away from their teams on leave, and they’re all free agents,” said Bettman. Facing questions on whether the league should suspend the players without pay, Bettman said, “I don’t think that is necessary at this stage.”

Bettman also refuted any sense among members of the public that the alleged assault reflects hockey culture more broadly.

“This is not typical of NHL players,” he said. “These players weren’t NHL players in the league playing games at the time this alleged incident took place.”

For many of the players, it comes down to personal choice.

“I think it should just be your own decision,” one said.

“Guys would be smart to use them, but I don’t think it needs to be mandatory,” another added.

“It’s their own risk, right?” said a third. “It’s their life.”

Some of the players voting no indicated that, for their part, they do wear neck guards and other cut-protective gear, including one who had been cut by a skate in the past.

“I wear it. It happened to me,” he said. “I think it’s up to you. I think that there (should) be no requirement.”

“I don’t think you should require them to, but I think it’s stupid not to (wear one),” another player said. “Why wouldn’t you?”

“We’re all big boys,” said a third. “I personally wear them. But being required to? No.”

One idea many players shared was to mandate laceration protection at minor and youth levels first, with the idea of eventually bringing it to the NHL as players get more used to wearing the equipment.

“In the NHL, I don’t think it should be required,” one player said. “But in minor hockey, I think it should.”

“If the NHL mandated it, I’d be OK with that,” said another. “But they should grandfather in everyone who’s used to not playing with it, like they did with visors.”>

Not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand it's always good to get best on best international hockey. On the other hand I kinda feel like wedging a tournament into a weekend takes the shine off somewhat?

Evan Paul was playing his second game in net for the North Vancouver Wolf Pack when a fight erupted in the third period of his team's Jan. 25 game against the Richmond Sockeyes at Minoru Arena.

Grishin, 19, was (previously) suspended 16 games for incidents earlier this season, according to the PJHL website.

On Nov. 16, he received a 13-game suspension — five games for harassment of an official, three games as supplemental discipline, two games after receiving a game misconduct for being the third man in a fight, and three games as supplemental discipline for being a repeat offender.

Lawyers for Michael McLeod and Cal Foote of the New Jersey Devils, Dillon Dubé of the Calgary Flames and Carter Hart of the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday confirmed the charges. They come two days after 24-year-old Alex Formenton, another member of the 2018 junior team and a former NHL player, showed up at London Police Service headquarters and was charged with sexual assault.

All 5 players have now been charged.

Eller's importance to the 2018 Capitals cup run cannot be understated.

He scored the OT-Game winner that got Washington their first win of the playoffs (and stopped Columbus going up 0-3). He moved up the lineup when Backstrom went down with a bad hand. And then to cap it all, he scored the Stanley Cup winning goal against Vegas.

Great player, great dude. Congratulations.
