In 1981, Justine Blainey earned a spot on a boys' team in the Metro Toronto Hockey League (MTHL) but was denied the right to play.

From the age of 12 and throughout her teenage years, she pursued an arduous legal battle of five different court cases, culminating in a hearing with the Supreme Court of Canada in 1987.

Now, more than 30 years on, Blainey, 50, and those closest to her tell their stories in Frozen Out - a three-part podcast series for BBC World Service's Amazing Sport Stories.

It is spring 1985 and 12-year-old Justine is at home in Toronto, writing a letter.

"I can play, but may I? MTHL tryout time starts today and I'm going to hear the same words again: 'Yes, you're good enough. We wish we could take you. But you're a girl.'"

Justine spells out her reasons for wanting to play with the boys. Girls' hockey offers just two levels, and only half the number of games a top MTHL boys' team will play.

Hi all! I just wanted to highlight a feature that I think is pretty cool that I added to the bot today. I added... drumroll links to the comments/posts from the daily thread! So now if you want to find your favorite team's comment or post, you can click the link next to your team's name and go directly to the place where you can get additional details and stats for the game.

If your account is not on lemmy.ca, this feature won't work with all front ends. But I have tested it and verified that it works with Voyager, mlmym (old.lemmy), and alexandrite, so I would recommend using one of those until the lemmy devs bake this feature into lemmy itself. Most instances support mlmym by adding "old" before the URL. So for example, if your instance is lemmy.world, you could access it with old.lemmy.world. Oh, and today I also fixed an issue with the bot where the daily thread wasn't getting the score and game clock of games anymore.

But this season, the NHL team had to say goodbye to one of its most unsung icons.

In September, after 60 years of service with the organization, thoracic surgeon Dr. David Mulder retired from his role as the team's head physician. (As an emeritus, he can still act as an advisor.)

As a member of the Canadiens, Mulder has seen it all, from eight Stanley Cup championships to potentially life-altering injuries for players like Trent McCleary and Max Pacioretty.

I guess that once the league decided to go through with the punishment that this was the obvious call. Someone has to be accountable.

Real shame that he spent 7 years getting abuse for his team building...only to find himself on the outside looking in at the exact moment they seem like they're about to make the step up.
