Game copy protection was an art form, as well as #cracking these protections. This cat and mouse game evolved over time, with protections including more and more complicated and well-hidden checks trying to identify poor or quickly made cracks. The best protections hindered the release of a crack long enough for the game to hit enough initial sales. After the initial sales the eventual release of a crack would no longer hurt (much).

Rewind to 2025 and legal purchase of early 90s PC games from palaces such as COG: Apparently, there are plenty of releases that have the poor crack built-in, and where the anti-crack checks kick in, making the game unplayable. The irony is that the only way to play is to get a proper "real crack".

Cool write-up of the protection in "The Games: Winter Challenge" and the associated problems of "legal releases":

After at least 15 years we once more played Photopia by Adam Cadre. I would describe it as an „adventure on rails“ with very linear gameplay and hardly any puzzles but very surprising and dense story. Still a great classic.
Make sure you try it out.

Dynamite Headdy is the game in which I am seeing the Game Over screen more often than anything else. It’s tough.

New video: Funny Playing 4.2 SEGA GameGear LCD Mod

This is another GameGear mod. But as my favorite LCD mod is currently not available, I ordered a random one off of Aliexpress. It turned out to be a Funny Playing branded one -- it seems it's their version 4.2, with laminated screen and glass lens. Funny enough (haha!) I can't see it on their website. No idea what that's about, but let's give this mod a go, anyway!

I know how some people feel about PS2 and PSP being considered retro. But here we are.

I finally got to finish God of War 2 and Ghost of Sparta in the past couple of weeks. It’s being a great experience playing it with upscale and in a portable fashion.

Now I got the remastered version of the 3rd game and I’m ready for it!

What games have you dropped for one reason or another years ago and you want to pick it back up?

Finished up Yoshi's Island. Fantastic game and shows off how far ahead Nintendo was back then. My biggest complaint is that near the end there were way too many autoscrollers and maze levels. Autoscrollers can be fine but maze levels are always the worst part of any Super Mario game

Overall not as good as Super Mario World (the GOAT), but I'd put it in the same tier as Super Mario Wonder. If you have any interest in platformers it's definitely worth playing even if you're not into #RetroGaming
