I think women just tend to not be as involved in the types of music I like. I can probably name 10x more metal artists with a male lead than a female lead.

That said, if there are two great bands, one with a male lead and one with a female lead, I'll probably prefer the female lead. For example:

  • hard rock/metal - Flyleaf, Evanescence, Halestorm, Paramore
  • punk/ska - The Interruptors, No Doubt, Bikini Kill
  • folksy/indie pop - Of Monsters and Men
  • mainstream rock - Garbage, Cranberries

But there's just not enough, so I also listen to a ton of male leads.

Don't forget the animal lead vocalists like Hatebeak and Rodent Destroyer
