Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in [email protected]. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)

(This list may get expanded when necessary.)

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @[email protected], @[email protected], or @[email protected].

What's happening is the US is negotiating with Russia without involving Ukraine. Not too dissimilar from European powers negotiating with Hitler over German claims on Czechoslovakia without Czechoslovakia being part of the negotiations. We know how that ended.

When Trump and Putin reach an agreement (without consideration for Ukraine) they make some bold claim similar to "Peace for our time" and expect everyone to go along with it. When that happens, Ukraine can ignore the agreement and continue fighting, but if too many countries buy Trump's version of "Peace for our time" then Ukraine could be considered the bad guy because they're not agreeing to end the war.

But after this? Every country in the world has reiterated their support for Ukraine. Any "peace plan" promoted by Trump will be known to be all about appeasing Putin and be rightly ignored by everyone. Trump's WWIII comment made it clear that Trump is afraid of Putin, nobody will respect anything he says about Ukraine going forward.

Putin is not Hitler. I'm not saying it's not a problem to be solved, having taken many lives and taking more, but it's a different problem.

Putin's regime is not capable of growing power. It's only capable of capturing more power. While ultimately similar inability made Nazis weak, they were capable of modernizing industries and rebuilding the military. Maybe if it were done slowly over 30 years instead of 5 years, they'd turn out a similar failure as Putin's Russia, having corrupted Germany enough to reduce its danger. We don't know, since they outright started killing people, putting them into prison camps and marching with knives on the streets.

Every country in the world has reiterated their support for Ukraine.

That's not true, but suppose it were.

If all those countries sent soldiers and equipment to Ukraine, that is, declared war on Russia, it would be over.

If they are not doing this, then what they are actually doing is the degree of real support.

Then maybe Trump's "deal" just shows it.

I think enough conscripted Ukrainians have already died, and everyone talking against such deal, be it even capitulation, should wish for Americans, Canadians, Brits, French, Germans, Italians ... to be conscripted to that frontline to end the war. Or admit they just want some Ukrainians to die for their feeling of justice they have in their safe cozy life.

What are you talking about? NATO air power alone (even without the US) would absolutely demolish what's left of the Russian military. Why are you talking about conscription in NATO countries?

Besides that, if Russia had its way we'd all wind up being conscripted into Putin's army and sent into the meat grinder for the sake of his imperial ambitions.

I think you need to take a break from Russian state media for a few hours, you're currently living in a bizarro fantasy world and are unable to have a conversation with people living in the real world.

NATO air power alone (even without the US) would absolutely demolish what’s left of the Russian military. Why are you talking about conscription in NATO countries?

To replace similar with similar. Don't move the goalposts. Point is - in my opinion enough Ukrainians have died and every westerner who wants further fighting should protest for their country to enter war.

So where's that NATO air power? If it's nowhere to be seen, then Ukrainians better think what's better realistically for themselves, not try to entertain cowards.

Besides that, if Russia had its way we’d all wind up being conscripted into Putin’s army and sent into the meat grinder for the sake of his imperial ambitions.

WDYM Russia had its way, "its way" is to destroy a (half) Russian-speaking country near it so that Russians wouldn't see an alternative daily that doesn't live based on Soviet mob rules. Why would a regime built on selling resources want to conquer its buyers? Who are still its buyers indirectly and sometimes directly, that's why they are not entering war.

I think you need to take a break from Russian state media for a few hours,

I think I'll do without your advice on anything at all, you are not intelligent enough. Russian state media is something I ignore since being 12.

you’re currently living in a bizarro fantasy world and are unable to have a conversation with people living in the real world.

Your comment has literally nothing to do with what I wrote because you are a coward and invent things to accuse me of.

Your country is not in war. Ukraine is in war and has suffered big human losses. Why are you not protesting for your country to enter war?
