Weird you think the "look how insane and fascist these people are" is a good campaign when your own party head is currently enabling genocide...
Like he could have just not done that, and Dems probably would have won. Continuing to shovel more bombs hoping some stern words would get the war criminals to change their minds was a stupid strategy. They made no change in their actions and hoped it would work out, despite knowing how unpopular that was
