Such a great song.

All of their songs are. It just occurred to me that SoaD might be one of the most political bands out there, up there with RatM. Which made me curious if there were many right wing fans that complained about them getting political because they didn't realize they were saying that all along. And of course there were.

Guess it's why Cobain sang about it over 30 years ago.

He's the one who likes all our pretty songs...

Though now I'm wondering what bands I've enjoyed without realizing they were fascist leaning lol.

Though now I’m wondering what bands I’ve enjoyed without realizing they were fascist leaning lol.

Sadly i think Tool may fit that description...

Seems like he's fallen for the illusion that someone who opposes lies must themself represent the truth.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

He's def got a thing going on. One hell of a drummer. Wonder what the band dynamic is off stage. Do they all just stay apolitical? do they grief each other? They're still working in some way that I can't fathom, good for them i suppose.

There's probably a lot of "shut up and drum, dipshit" going on around there.

Never listened to them but last names like that it's not surprising. Armenia has been in a rough spot politically for a long time now

You should give them a listen. Their sound is amazing and I can't really blame people for enjoying without really listening to the words. It wouldn't surprise me if you hear some and realize you've known them for decades without realizing.

My top ones: Toxicity, Deer Dance, Aerials, Chop Suey, Spiders, Lost in Hollywood, BYOB, Hypnotize

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Chop Suey was named that because the original name of Righteous Suicide would get the song banned.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Righteous Suicide or Self-righteous Suicide? Haven't heard anything about it either way, but asking because the second is in the lyrics and would be more apt.

Though IMO Chop Suey is an even better name because of the imagery it conjures combined with the meaning of the song. It's pretty graphic like a holy fuck moment when you connect the dots.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

You're correct. Self-righteous suicide.

Did some digging and while there are some right leaning bands on my "I've enjoyed their music" list, none of them came as a surprise, like Leonard Skynyrd, Kid Rock, Five Finger Death Punch.

Guess self-awareness isn't equal between right and left wings. Which is maybe even illustrated by being curious about this in the first place. Or maybe I'm overgeneralizing my own experience lol.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

As a left winger, I’m probably more okay with listening to a song by an artist that doesn’t represent my views as long as it’s not too crazy and I’m not actively supporting them.

Imo art has value regardless of its source.

Right wingers for some reason feel betrayed. I guess to them it’s about not crossing tribes rather than going where their inspiration takes them.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

Yeah, I can relate to that.

I think another part of it is that the art itself isn't often overtly political. Maybe that even plays into the sense of betrayal because of how often the politics they support aren't ones that can be talked about openly and they feel like since they avoid saying what they are thinking, everyone else should also.

I think you're right. Rage Against the Machine apparently pissed off some conservative fans by opposing Trump.

John Dolmayan is a Trump supporter. Self-awareness doesn't have to be bipartisan.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It's a minefield, to be sure. SoaD's John Dolmayan is a Trump supporter.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, I guess it's important to remember bands aren't monoliths and some members themselves might even be the subject of In Bloom. And even having some leanings on particular topics doesn't mean agreement on all topics.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That kinda makes me want to form a 9-piece band called "Monolith" that includes:

An auth left

An auth center

An auth right

A left center

A centrist

A right center

A lib left

A lib center

And a lib right

First concert starts WW3.

20 years later, the survivors get nostalgic for concert wars.

"Sure, it set us back a few thousand years, but how awesome was it when the lead guitarist impaled Rand Paul, Mike Pence, and Xi Jinping all in one go?"

"Yeah, I guess that was pretty cool. I do miss potable water, though. Anyway, what's your favorite song?"

"Probably 'All you need is love, a diversified portfolio, a Judeo-Christian ethic and the means of production.'"

"I found it a little wordy, but it does get its point across."
