As a 20 year old, I have both :')
Still want to do uni and make a name for myself, achieve some cool things for the world & humanity, but at the same time I feel like just "making the most of it," and try being content just messing around with electronics and FOSS in my free time... But I guess that can just be my back-up if university doesn't pan out.
Network. Get to know people. That's what my parents never got across. People can hand you jobs in Uni. Out there you have to scruff for them and fight tooth and nail for a crappy job regardless of your SAT scores. The bigger thing that I never understood: you don't make yourself. Other people bolster you into positions. It's not cheating. It's how the system works.
