I don’t expect much, but Newsom could totally seize on this moment to reinvigorate a progressive left.

He's neo-liberal at best. That doesn't mean those on the progressive left can't sieze on this moment to invigorate themselves, and work with him and those like him to fight against these injustices.
He's not a sole savior who can right all the wrongs, he's just one man. That doesn't mean we can't stand beside and fight with him. He's one among the many, we need to decide on our own values, and decide if they're worth fighting for.
Looking for a saviour will only make your cause weaker. This needs to be grassroots.
Humans don't co-ordinate well in groups with more than 50 members, having a central figure to follow is useful for maintaining co-ordination and a clear message.
Waiting for someone else to start the movement is why we are here.
There's no movement without class consciousness. Grassroots doesn't work without, well, grassroots
