I don't get the praise for these games personally, they look generic as all hell. I didn't play them myself but at this point I don't know is it even necessary anymore.
All I can say is from my experience, but ACO is really a RPG with lots of historical context and historical story telling. I love open world 1st or 3rd person RPGs and both of these are open, good story and characters.
I'm glad you love it, however it looks very generic and uninteresting to me.
there's the so called "Ubisoft Formula" for Assassin's Creed Odyssey, which is: slash some enemies, climb a tower, free a camp, slash some enemies, climb a tower… they also did it with Far Cry 3, 4 and 5.
What's generic about Ghost of Tsushima evades me a little though. I don't like it myself but it's a game which requires lots of skill and endurance and it has beautiful graphics and a captivating story.
How would you define a regular fantasy RPG?
The Witcher 3? Skyrim? Legend of Grimrock?
Elaborate, please. What exactly do you dislike about the games I mentioned? What are some games you liked in that genre?
The Witcher 3 is way better than 1 and 2 combined and got its GOTY awards for a good reason. If you dislike Grimrock's dungeon-only setting, try Legend of Grimrock 2!
Other classical RPGs you might not have played: Two Worlds and Gothic 3.
