Did game companies get royalties from rentals? I though the idea was that you’d want to buy it if you couldn’t beat it in a rental period

I thought that was the case, but looking into it now, I can't seem to find evidence of it... So it might some rumour I've read somewhere about that game, hu, I'm not sure now.
