Currently it blanks out the content ( IE the post title, etc ) when you go to a mod removed post, but you will still see the title in the modlog.

Should we continue to blank out mod removed posts and communities, or show their content when you go to them?

The mod-log seems like an important transparency tool and I am glad it exists in Lemmy. It would be a shame if that got nerfed to a point where it would have little value left.

The modlog is staying the same, and it will always show what got removed. This is more about when you go to a removed post or community, should it show all the info.

Hmm, ok I see, My bad that I miss-understood.

I think there is the need to hit a sweet-spot between using the upcoming "purge" as little as possible (for transparency reasons) but not leave an instance-admin open to legal issues if the content of a post can't be left publicly accessible.

Might add unnecessary complexity, but how about letting the moderator choose with the check-box if the content is blanked out or not when removing a post?

I'd rather purge and mod remove be distinct, that would be overly complex IMO to add more weird types of removes outside of those two.

for legal responsibility hosting an instance, if someone posts illegal content, whatever, it should be possible to hide it from public access.

Thats why we are adding a separate purge functionality to delete such content (including images). But I dont think it makes sense to have both remove and purge do effectively the same thing.

For now you can do manual DB deletes for illegal content, but I'm working on purge recently to do the same thing through the API / UI. https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/904

If you end up showing it, maybe put it in a spoiler.

Given that purge exists, it seems like showing the content when you go to them makes sense.

The only other idea I have is implementing a click to reveal, but that seems like overkill to me.

Purge ( IE full database delete ) doesn't exist yet, but I've been working on it recently.

The danger with showing mod-removed content is that it still might not be a good thing to allow people to access it. IE lets say a post has a bunch of racist ranting, and a mod removes it. Currently that's being blanked out if you go to that post.

My mistake, I misunderstood and thought purge was already present.

I think my tendency would be to consider there to be about 3 categories of content. In parentheses is the result that I would probably go with when classifying the content in that category.

  • Rule Violation (can be viewed upon click)
  • Reprehensible (cannot be viewed)
  • Banned/Illegal (purged from the DB)

Clearly banned/illegal or reprehensible content would also be rule violations in most cases, so I more mean that rule violation is the minimum category to be moderated and that a rule violation isn't excluded from the other categories, etc.

Might you not want to be able to preserve the offending post so that the poster can be brought to justice?

[โ€“] [email protected] 2 points 3 years ago (1 children)

The post title is still in the modlog. I could also add the description there too.

[โ€“] [email protected] 1 points 3 years ago (1 children)

I was thinking that if the police or someone like that got involved then it would be better to have the entire unaltered thing available, so that rather than delete it from the db it should just not appear in the front end.

Hosting illegal content puts site administrators at risk, not the people posting the content.

[โ€“] [email protected] 3 points 3 years ago

I think it should be three-tiered: For mild rule breaking content, just delisting them might be fine and can add a layer of transparency. For more serious things like stuff praising Nazis and the like, it's probably a good idea to at least not display it to the public. Same for spam since you don't want the spammer to have any way of making their ad visible on your platform. Finally, for extreme and/or illegal content, there absolutely needs to be a way to permanently delete it from the server, both because it's the decent thing to do and so instance admins don't get in trouble.

I like the current system, where removed posts are blanked. I don't really see the point of preserving content after it's removed by a mod if the modlog already shows what got removed.

[โ€“] [email protected] 0 points 3 years ago

I think everything should be pruged. People make mistakes and change their minds

Modlog content needs to be accessible. What has been made public should stay public. Lemmy threads are not some kind of private tracker forums.

FBI or police of your country may require the material if illegal, but then, public access should be blocked ... i guess. Did you know Switzerland made apology of genocide illegal ?
