So I realize many of you aren't on reddit and use this instead, but wanted to share on here anyways. Tried navigating to reddit since updating to Android 12, and getting hit with this wonderful pop-up.

I'll be moving, hopefully, to LineageOS, but I won't be banming off having reddit on there either. Not a fan of their native app for behavior tracking reasons.

this isn't a web browser support problem, it's just that they're doing everything possible to move users to their mobile app, and this annoying pop up is present in all browsers on all mobile devices πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Interesting, I didn't see it on chrome on this exact link?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 3 years ago

Yeah I'd get this in chrome all the time.

The official Reddit app is the worst Reddit app available.
You can use third-party apps like Slide or RedReader.

If you use Reddit without an account, you can also use alternative web clients like http://libredd.it and https://teddit.net.

Alternatively, use Lemmy. πŸ™‚
Which I have to say here, because I do not endorse Reddit.

If you’re on iOS checkout Apollo for Reddit

[–] [email protected] 11 points 3 years ago (2 children)

They've had those for a while. Won't even let you see more comments using their web app.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 years ago (1 children)

Yeah, and to my knowledge, it's independent of which browser you use. It's just their mobile webpage.

They actually had an okay mobile site years ago, but then their app came out and they started removing features to try to get people to switch to it.

From my experience it only shows up if you're logged out, I can use it normally when I log in. As for op, I recommend RedReader to browse Reddit, it's available on F-Droid.

Redreader or infinity are great... I probably wouldn't use reddit if they closed off 3rd-party clients like twitter and facebook have.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 years ago

Totally agree with that.

~~It'll also show you a pop-up to direct you to r/popular or use the app after a while and will stop showing you posts from the subreddit you're looking at.~~ This is 100% them just trying to force people into using the app. If you enable the Desktop Mode in Firefox for mobile it won't show you the pop-ups.

Personally I've been using Slide for years and I've recently started using libreddit on PC.

EDIT: Ultimately I just want to stop having a reddit account but it's really useful for technical issues.

EDIT 2: Didn't fully look at the screenshot and ended up explaining what you already know

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 years ago

Slide has been my go to also for lurking and saving thread that help me with work related issues.

Use old.reddit.com, a libreddit instance or a teddit instance to get around this bs

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 years ago

yeah, not sure this is a dropped support, more like incessant attemps to siphon you into a more intrusive format

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 years ago

It's 100% a ploy to get people to use their app. There is no technical reason the Reddit mobile site can't run on Firefox or use all of Reddit's features.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 years ago (1 children)

I recommend you use old.reddit.com or i.reddit.com. Alternatively, you could use Slide, an amazing Reddit client (you don't need to login to use too).

Alternatively, use teddit.net (or other instances) if you don't need to log in. It will even proxy your connection to Reddit so they can't fingerprint your browser.

+1 for teddit. I've also seen libreddit, but I prefer teddit since it's more akin to old.reddit.com.

Edit: also worth mentioning, teddit is to reddit like invidious is to youtube -- you can't login with an actual reddit account to vote and comment.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 years ago (1 children)

Ah yeah I do like the ability to login for comments. Does libreddt support that?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 years ago

I'm not sure, but I don't believe so.

FOSS clients: Slide, Infinity, RedReader

Proxies: libredd.it, teddit.net, kddit.kalli.st

Stealth is another really nice Android client that is account-free for those who don't want an account or to login but still want to subscribe and save posts locally.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 years ago (1 children)

That’s cool, is stealth open source?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 years ago

Yep, it's on F-Droid! And Gitlab under GPL3.

[–] [email protected] -1 points 3 years ago* (last edited 3 years ago)

I use Stealth myself, but forgot about it for some reason.

I think that happens only for some subreddits like r/piracy,imatotalpieceofshit etc. that they deemed 'problematic' or something so they force the app on all posts.

If you are using uBlock Origin I think this filter removes the element: www.reddit.com##xpromo-untagged-content-blocking-modal

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 years ago

Fuck Reddit anyways

[–] sam 4 points 3 years ago

Yup. Even on desktop it wants me to log in or I can't read comments. Sucks when it's useful content with very few other references on the internet.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 years ago

I wonder how many people just mindlessly pressed that button & downloaded the app, which is now sneakily gathering data in the background

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 years ago

I don't think it's FOSS but I use Sync on Android, the experience feels very sleek and coming from iPhone originally I found the same gestures I was used to to navigate. I can also still use it with my suspended account (can't comment of course, but I still have my custom frontpage and can still add new reddits to it).

The only winning move is not to play lol. Leave Reddit and never look back πŸ˜‚

Don't use their proprietary app, it burns through your data in hours. Every time you open it up it downloads pretty much every media whether you click on it or not. And even if you leave the app unless you close it it will keep burning data for nothing. Absolute bloatware.
