Welcome

Welcome to c/[email protected]. Broadly, this community is a place to discuss veganism. Discussion on intersectional topics related to the animal rights movement are also encouraged.

What is Veganism?

'Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals ...'

— abridged definition from The Vegan Society

Rules

The rules are subject to change, especially upon community feedback.

  1. Discrimination is not tolerated. This includes speciesism.
  2. Topics not relating to veganism are subject to removal.
  3. Posts are to be as accessible as practicable:
    • embedded images of text require alt-text
    • posts with an image of text should have a transcription in the body or alt-text
    • paywalled articles must have an accessible non-paywalled link;
    • use the original source whenever possible for a news article.
  4. Content warnings are required for triggering content.
  5. Bad-faith carnist rhetoric & anti-veganism are not allowed, as this is not a space to debate the merits of veganism. Anyone is welcome here, however, and so good-faith efforts to ask questions about veganism may be given their own weekly stickied post in the future.
    • before jumping into the community, we encourage you to read examples of common fallacies here.
    • if you're asking questions about veganism, be mindful that the person on the other end is trying to be helpful by answering you and treat them with at least as much respect as they give you.
  6. Posts and comments whose contents – text, images, etc. – are largely created by a generative AI model are subject to removal. We want you to be a part of the vegan community, not a multi-head attention layer running on a server farm.
  7. No brigading, either off-site or on-site. An incitement to brigade includes two elements: a call to disruptive action and a specific direction outside of this community in which to take that action. Exceptions include:
    • Calls to boycott.
    • Calls to in-person protest of a government, high-profile individual, or company/organization.
    • Votes provided they have a sufficiently broad target audience or provably effective controls against vote brigading.
    • Petitions.
  8. All Lemmy.World Terms of Service also apply.

My favourite is all the people who eat vaguely with some idea of what a healthy and balanced diet looks like, who never track intakes and eat solely based on vibes suddenly breaking out concerns about nutrition.

We eat 80% the same shit except I have to cook more from scratch and replace meat centric foods with legume/lentils centric foods. There is no essential nutrient found solely in pork chops...

And if you offer them something they act like you're going to feed them a plate of crickets. No Becky peanut butter sandwiches are vegan.

I always get "I barely eat any meat."

My dude, if you need to make a confession, see a priest, or a shrink.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 8 months ago

I get that a lot too. I'm not gonna pat you on the back for it any more than I'll pat someone on the back for barely ever watching dog fights

"I only eat cheese and bacon". Really does that make rape and murder better?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 8 months ago (1 children)

No, but letting perfect be the enemy of improvement is counter productive. Maybe that's a chance to introduce someone to some recipes that could scratch the itch that cheese and bacon do, or connect with them and potentially form a bridge for them to walk instead of meeting them with open hostility?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Depends. Can I still accuse them of raping and murdering?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago

You can do whatever you want, but if you actually care about animals you will have actual discussions with people instead of burning bridges and going on the internet to brag about it

Okay but eggs and honey are valid questions.

Chickens are gonna lay eggs regardless and bees are gonna make honey regardless.

As long as your not going out of your way to hurt the animals while collecting eggs/honey, what's the problem?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Chickens and bees are making eggs and honey for them, not for humans.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (2 children)

Yeah but bees always make more than they need and the humans can leave them plenty of honey to survive winter

And with eggs the eggs don't come out fertilized. Your not killing a baby chicken every time you eat an egg. And it's not like the chicken is gonna do anything with the egg. At most they'll either leave it so another animal comes and eats it or they eat it themselves cause chickens are gluttonous little bastards.

I'm not even trying to argue just to troll you or anything it's legitimately confusing. The chicken doesn't create the egg for any reason other than potential procreation. They'll produce eggs even when no males are around to fertilize them. They'll drop an egg and then promptly fuck off like it never even happened.

The point is animals are not to be manipulated for our benefit. Do you think a chicken crammed in a cage unable to ever spread its wings for its entire life is happy you're eating her extra eggs?

And just so you know;

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago

Yeah but bees always make more than they need and the humans can leave them plenty of honey to survive winter

What gives us the right to exploit them because they're good workers?

While this could be argued there is nuance to this. Do you know what happens to the male chickens in egg slavery yards? Many baby chickens are killed in the production of said egg.

How did the egg laying chickens come into existence? Where are all the roosters? What happens when they get too old to lay? How many eggs do their ancestors lay, are there health problems associated with the difference?

What creatures do the honey bees starve out? Are bee farms hotbeds of disease? How are sick hives treated? Do bees defend their honey? What are the bees fed instead?
