A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted, clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

- All posts must be showerthoughts
- The entire showerthought must be in the title
- No politics
- If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.

- If you feel strongly that you want politics back, please volunteer as a mod.

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.
Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Purdue pharmaceuticals got some pretty bad PR for the opioid crisis that got turned into settlement money, maybe we can finally use that model to get us some UBI as climate justice
All companies should donate to a climate fund. Whoever donates the least, gets to be famous.
All people should donate and those who donate the least get famous.
Oh wow! Look what happened! It's all the poor people who contributed to the problem the least, who also can't afford to donate, that look bad.
Sorry, but this is patently a terrible idea. at least from the perspective of calling out the poorest.
Just measure it as a percentage of their market cap/gross profit (yes gross, not net) rather than an absolute dollar amount, problem solved.
What if the poorest companies would not be excluded. Also, the environmental impact of the company should be considered too, so that the numbers would be fair. A company working on CCS technology doesn’t need to donate as much as another one that builds coal power.
No they should be sponsored by the politicians who refuse to aid those affected.

Make this mandatory so that funding from the actual causes go to where they are responsible for and to expose crimes against the planet. Maybe then they’ll care when they lose money from their negative actions and exposed crime affecting their sales.

The sponsorships should be for companies that thrive because they make products that increase global warming (or use them), which is most companies, so I digress.
It should also be an involuntary thing. Getting a natural disaster assigned to you should be a badge of shame, and any company named for it should be obligated to help with relief efforts.
Given the negative PR and cost for providing relief, I'm betting that quite a few would clean things up pretty quickly so they don't earn the badge of shame. Maybe enough to slow or stop global climate change.
But all of this requires that we care more about people and the climate than we do about corporations and their profits. Since it's been made clear that the government is basically bought and owned by corporate interests, this will never happen.
The solution is to supplant the existing government with one that actually represents the interests of the people that live in the country, not the corporations.
We'd run out of companies though
Just keep repeating the same companies, they can pay for relief each time.
