I wished to all that is real I hadn't used the dot Live TLD for my self-hosted Mastodon instance. Domain renewal costs are getting out of control and no way to change domain names and keep posts. I could spin up a new instance and then migrate my accounts over but lose everything I've posted, replies, etc esp @hashtaggames@oldfriends.live account.

Be nice if Mastodon and Federation had a way to migrate domain names. If the IO domain TLD goes defunct, probably won't, some big instances could be in a bind.

Luckily, those servers will have a couple years to transition, if it does, per ICANN policies. Still.

If wishes were dollars, we would all be rich. #MastoAdmin #Federation #Fediverse .

It really speaks of the bad design (in terms of conceptual design, not eg.: UI design) that for a platform that says to speak for people to have digital sovereignty and independence, that so many people say "just spin your own", it turns out that identity relies on trusting (and keeping trust on) third-party, nation-state level "name distribution" actors, who can easily take away that identity anchor be either by their own initiative or spurred by other nation-state level actors.

Looks like it's $22 on porkbun. Are you expecting it to get much worse?

@czech NameCheap raised renewals to over $32 for dot live, dot social is now $38, blaming the registries for raising their prices.

On October 4, 233 TLDs had price increases.
