I think there was an actually enclosed area, but still sea must have been fairly calm the whole way.
That photo is them leaving where they were staying, there's a service nook by the rudder for maintenance. Probably still pretty rough and it's amazing they survived for 2 weeks without being crushed or drowned.

This was a monumentally dangerous act, to the point of being near suicidal. As a former sailor I can state with confidence that it is nothing less than a miracle that any of them survived. Forget their managing not to lose their balance or grip on the rudder. Even a moderately heavy sea would have easily swept all of them off to near certain death.
It'd be cool if the gobal south wasn't destroyed by imperialism so people wouldn't have to go to such absurd lengths.
