You line up the apples to cut around 1/3rd of both and you have 3 more or less equal portions.

I know this is a joke, but if you line them up to cut 1/3rd of each apple, then you have four parts which divide the apples evenly:
- A 2/3 part of an apple
- A 2/3 part of the other apple
- The two 1/3 parts of both apples
