They're whining DEI about white characters, now, too?

[–] ech@lemm.ee 22 points 4 months ago (2 children)

"Woke" is anything they don't like, including characters they can't immediately sexualize.

[–] MrMcGasion@lemmy.world 13 points 4 months ago

My guess would be that Ciri looks older now, she was 21 in Witcher 3, and there are a lot of Leonardo DiCaprio types out there who get offended by any suggestion they should be attracted to women their own age. And as you point out, assume that any women in media are there for them to sexualize.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

I'm sorry, did they expect a chainmail bikini in Witcher?

[–] dance_ninja@lemmy.world 15 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Reminds me of the hate Aloy's character design gets by certain gamers.

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 11 points 4 months ago

Child Aloy haunts my nightmares.

[–] Soup@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

Hey now, they haven’t seen the sun in two years and like worms only crawl out of the earth when it rains so of course they don’t know what real people look like. And c’mon, if you didn’t respect women for anything more than their appearance then you’d also have ridiculously high standards and nothing more to offer them but insults when those standards weren’t met! /s

These people suck and so do their opinions. There’s always going to be something wrong because if there isn’t then they feel like “normies” and among that group they’re bottom of the barrel. They could do something about it but that takes work(and probably therapy). There’s no point in trying to appease them because they’ll never be happy, they refuse to be.

@renwillis@mstdn.social nope, they want their female characters to look like starved prostitutes, plastered with makeup..

else, it's woke!

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 23 points 4 months ago (2 children)

But that photo looks like a starved prostitute plastered with makeup!

The woke / non woke neckbeard standard:

Hot actress:

Ugly actress:

[–] bazkie@beige.party 5 points 4 months ago

@Blue_Morpho I know!! some people are just really fucked up lol

[–] Gwendolyn@eldritch.cafe 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

@Blue_Morpho @bazkie Ok. I've looked at both pics and I can't tell if this is supposed to be a joke or I'm missing something.

PamSayingTheyreBothTheSamePicture.jpg?

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago

The difference is the cut out in front. By the time WandaVision came out, Elisabeth Olsen had enough clout to not have to always wear a costume that had a tit window.

He said it in his own post, he definitely is a sad dude…

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 18 points 4 months ago (1 children)

The trailer does give uncanny valley vibes. I chalk this up to toxic gamers saying anything they don't like is woke. It's like they can't even articulate what they're upset about.

[–] Z3k3@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago (2 children)

It took me a second to adjust. I recon it's just the change of engine and I have no recollection of the camera being that in her face for 3

I'm kinda stoked for this given the way 3 ended

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 2 points 4 months ago (4 children)

I haven't played 3. I got the trilogy and tried to start with 1 but it's pretty dated lol. I should just play 3.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

2 is much less dated, but you can just go to 3.

[–] odium@programming.dev 2 points 4 months ago

The only witcher content I've consumed is witcher 3 and it was great. Didn't have any context going in and enjoyed it.

[–] Z3k3@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

There is a very loose through thread between the game but the 1st in particular is very dated both for mechanics. You can play just 3 very happily

Me specifically. (Trying to be vague ans as spoiler free as possible below but just incase it's not here be yer warning)

You don't meet yen until game three and I had read a couple of the books by this point so for me personally my Gerald had built a rich relationship with triss in 1 and 2 but the cannon relationship is yen so it made for some really tough choices on that side of the game.

we all ended up just good friends which also felt right in reflection.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Wait... Which way did it end for you? Because there's several ways.

[–] Z3k3@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

There are I'm being vague on purpose so as to not spoil

The complainers are stuck on the r34 version of Ciri, which is why they're upset the sequel doesn't match their wank material.

Edit: It was the same for Horizon. In the first game, you could glitch photo mode to clip through clothes and see fully modelled breasts. Then the sequel popped up and their wank imagery was ruined.

[–] TastyWheat@lemmy.world 13 points 4 months ago

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Wait a sec. You're telling me that women can look different as time goes on? Like... ageing?

I'm MORTIFIED.

[–] Mandy@sh.itjust.works 12 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Remember the name, once the game comes out and of its a total hit. He and all the others who follow will change their tune, as they always do.

[–] renwillis@mstdn.social 6 points 4 months ago

@Mandy@sh.itjust.works They’ll “realize” the game is actually “anti-woke”!

[–] snarl@beige.party 12 points 4 months ago

@renwillis@mstdn.social she looks cool and pretty badass

[–] darthsid@lemmy.world 10 points 4 months ago

Ah yes the classic anti male gaze outrage.

[–] MisterNeon@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Honestly I don't like it when people look hyper realistic in my games. This isn't a "vidja girls must look hot", but more "oh god you spent 250K on skin textures". This stuff puts me in the uncanny valley. I want my girls to look like my boys, cell shaded or pixels.

[–] baldingpudenda@lemmy.world 22 points 4 months ago (1 children)

We peaked here:

This is also acceptable:

[–] MisterNeon@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

I held back my opinions about the Dreamcast so I wouldn't rant about aesthetics.

[–] blockheadjt@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 months ago

Maybe I'm not the target demographic for that post, but I find that character beautiful.

[–] EfreetSK@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (2 children)

Well as director Joel Schumacher once said: people like to see beautiful people. That's why (lead) actors are usually very beautiful, regardless of gender. I mean sure, sometimes you just need Danny DeVito but you get the point

Although personally I don't see what's the problem with the screenshot, just replying to what OP said

Disclaimer: I haven't heard him saying it myself, Mike from channel RedLetterMedia mentioned he saw an interview with him on this topic. But regardless, it made sense to me

[–] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

sometimes you just need Danny DeVito

Too true. Sometimes you need beautiful people, but sometimes you need perfection.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

Somebody wake up their GIMP, we're gonna need to see what a perfect Ciri looks like.

[–] renwillis@mstdn.social 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

@EfreetSK@lemmy.world how does one define “beautiful”? By who’s standard? Yours? Mine? It’s subjective and also cultural. Then there’s realness which an abundance of shows & movies also follow, casting the correct person for the mood & vibes.

In other words… I call bullshit on Schumacher.

[–] thedeadwalking4242@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Beauty is subjective but I’m willing to bet I has distribution or atleast some agreement. There are definitely people who other people tend to find more attractive than others.

[–] renwillis@mstdn.social 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

@thedeadwalking4242@lemmy.world by who’s ideals?

White westeners?
East Asians?
Southeast Asians?

The moment you try to define beauty, you just end up a ignorant xenophobe.

Why is it bad to let characters age and look mildly real to the hard life that is these videogames?

[–] thedeadwalking4242@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

I’m not arguing characters shouldnt look normal. I was arguing the idea that there isn’t some consistency to what people generally consider attractive. I’d say across all of humanity, including all races there’s probably some agreement among attractiveness. Even without trying to define what it is. I’d say if you had people rank a group there would be some people that came out above others. I don’t think people’s opinion on attractiveness is fully random.

Even across races. Ofc there would be variance between cultural groups but internally those groups probably have some consistency.

@renwillis@mstdn.social DEI ugly stick? She's pretty!

[–] Gwendolyn@eldritch.cafe 6 points 4 months ago

@renwillis@mstdn.social I... I don't get it. What's wrong with how she looks?

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 months ago

I hate people.

[–] Mandy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 months ago

They haven't even seen any game yet man, damn chuds or whatever they called

[–] ech@lemm.ee 4 points 4 months ago

Expecting a lot more of the anti-woke shit with the game if the context of the trailer is anything to go by.

[–] vex@chaosfem.tw 3 points 4 months ago

@renwillis@mstdn.social

"I'm sad dude"

We can tell.

[–] the_white_wolf@social.tchncs.de 3 points 4 months ago

@renwillis@mstdn.social

The Hater gonna hate🤮
These "Gamers" are awfull and should search a new hobby!
They destroy our hobby with their conspiracy bullshit.

I find the new look from Ciri a little unfamiliar but i don't judge the game now already.
And i guess some people forget that The Witcher 4 isn't based on the RED Engine anymore. It's UE 5 which has another style then the RED Engine.

[–] replay@mstdn.games 2 points 4 months ago

@renwillis@mstdn.social I thought she was cool as hell.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

She looks properly Polish now.
