I’m pretty sure this million that everyone is paying is protection money so they don’t get a shake down

[–] [email protected] 28 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's called a racket. This is literally racketeering.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh… so, “business” got it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

As in waste management business.

"Protection money" implies a significant expense. A million dollars is so little to a big tech company (and not that much to Trump) that this is more like a "Congratulations!" card with a Starbucks gift certificate inside. It's as little as Altman can send without being insulting, but if the fact that he sent anything at all sways Trump even a little bit then the return on investment will be enormous.

It doesn’t imply a significant expense. My grandfather used to tell us a story of how he paid what was basically a mafia a monthly fee so his barber shop wouldn’t get broken into. I forgot the exact amount, but is was like $500/m or something.

Trump also deals in these “small” transactions. Get a hundred of them and it adds up.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I suppose this is just nitpicking, but I think $500 a month is a lot more to a barber than a million is to Altman.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago

I do agree with you. I guess maybe this is more like chips on a table? Like an ante, a bet?

Either way I think we can both agree it’s shady

It's to keep their name off a list. The Revenge President is back with more power, so better at least pretend to be with him if you're also powerful.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'd say this is more like kissing the ring.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 month ago

It must be a very tiny ring.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

I'm sure the oligarchs in Putin's system do the exact same thing.

[–] [email protected] 50 points 1 month ago

fucking gross

From Trump's point of view, this is his new subjects lining up to pay tribute.

From the perspective of the wealthy people making these donations, it's like stuffing a twenty dollar bill in the doorman's breast pocket.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 month ago

From everyone else's point of view it's also his new subjects lining up. There's no reason to excuse these companies regardless of what percent of the bottom line a million dollars is.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's also obeying in advance. Altman is Jewish. Just saying.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What does him being Jewish have anything to do with it?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

To the NatC's that adore donvict it means quite a bit. The fact that he's obeying in advance won't mean a thing.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago

From the perspective of the wealthy people making these donations, it’s like stuffing a twenty dollar bill in the doorman’s breast pocket I think you misspelled hooker and G-string

[–] [email protected] 33 points 1 month ago

Bribe. It's a bribe.

[–] [email protected] 28 points 1 month ago

Corporate fellacio

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This is fucking bullshit. What happened to our country? Remember, you chose this fucker.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 month ago

Sam Altman really has the most punchable face.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

What the fuck is an inauguration fund?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

It‘s a ticket to bribe Trump, so he continues to serves the upper 0.0001%

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

A way for captains to kick something up to the mafia don.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

There seems to be some precedent in place for this unfortunately https://www.politico.com/news/2021/01/09/biden-inaugural-donors-major-corporations-456907 I don’t know what prior amounts have been given though

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

US is a joke

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

of course he will, because that is the kind of presidency Trump will be running

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

The captains have to make sure to kick something up to the donvict.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Is there any non pos I can give my AI money to to get coding advice?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Sure, use local ones - see ollama.com

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I've fiddled with a few models but my woeful home server gets like 20 words a min. Maybe my setup is the issue.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You might be able to use some of the spaces on huggingface.co?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

I hope to try out a local rig I have that I once used for mining a little bit and then later for folding@home - but I need more disk space on there. That host has the tiniest drive on it - 128G. Once I solve that problem, I hope things like ollama can make use of the cards I have in it...for now, I'm using a 2022 macbook and it seems to do okay-ish with some models anyway.

I hope I never have to give one red cent to the likes of Altman.
