It's called a racket. This is literally racketeering.

"Protection money" implies a significant expense. A million dollars is so little to a big tech company (and not that much to Trump) that this is more like a "Congratulations!" card with a Starbucks gift certificate inside. It's as little as Altman can send without being insulting, but if the fact that he sent anything at all sways Trump even a little bit then the return on investment will be enormous.
It doesn’t imply a significant expense. My grandfather used to tell us a story of how he paid what was basically a mafia a monthly fee so his barber shop wouldn’t get broken into. I forgot the exact amount, but is was like $500/m or something.
Trump also deals in these “small” transactions. Get a hundred of them and it adds up.
I suppose this is just nitpicking, but I think $500 a month is a lot more to a barber than a million is to Altman.

From the perspective of the wealthy people making these donations, it's like stuffing a twenty dollar bill in the doorman's breast pocket.
From everyone else's point of view it's also his new subjects lining up. There's no reason to excuse these companies regardless of what percent of the bottom line a million dollars is.
It's also obeying in advance. Altman is Jewish. Just saying.

I've fiddled with a few models but my woeful home server gets like 20 words a min. Maybe my setup is the issue.

I hope to try out a local rig I have that I once used for mining a little bit and then later for folding@home - but I need more disk space on there. That host has the tiniest drive on it - 128G. Once I solve that problem, I hope things like ollama can make use of the cards I have in it...for now, I'm using a 2022 macbook and it seems to do okay-ish with some models anyway.
I hope I never have to give one red cent to the likes of Altman.
