I need your advice guys:

Now there's only 2 of us in a team of what should be 4 people. I'm the high performer of the 2 of us. Significantly.

I have the most difficult clients and have the most responsibility.

Next Thursday my probation ends.

I am underpaid 25-30k compared to the same role elsewhere.

Should I attempt a negotiation of salary?

I'm crowd sourcing opinions. I've never done this before. I'm in a really strong position as I will no doubt be training any new staff, and will get the most difficult client of the guy who just quit.

You totally should.

You could broach it as expectations of the role/output given youโ€™ve lost a team member. Their response should give you a pretty good indication of whether theyโ€™ll come to the party.

Do it. Ask A Manager has some good advice on how.

You'll probably have the most leverage now with 2 of 4 in your team remaining, once they replace the other two they might start to think you are easily replaceable too if you decide to leave. Right now, it sounds like they cannot afford to lose you.

Staff turnover has a business cost too - rehiring, retraining, slower service to clients in the meantime which may cause business losses etc, if they're smart they will factor that into your pay request.

it's often easier to get a new position than get a raise

and what happens if the boss says no? will there be repercussions against you?

I have the best taste in music, all the songs I like are the best songs ever made, every other artist or track I don't like is objectively bad. Just so we're clear.

How far is too far to travel for a job?

I saw an ad for a job that's about 45 minutes one way by car (non-peak) and around an hour and a half by PTV. It is similar to my former uni commute in peak times. It would only be for two days a week so maybe it wouldn't be that bad.

[โ€“] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago

Depends on how many days in the office. I gottta commute into town ends up being ~1.5 hours door to door 1 way. Fine twice a week, but any more than that starts to become pretty unfeasible.

[โ€“] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Itโ€™s completely personal. For me a 45 min drive twice a week would be completely ok, especially for the right job. Easy actually. Lots of people do this or more everyday. I wouldnโ€™t do the 1.5hr PT, double the commute time isnโ€™t appealing since I have car and donโ€™t mind driving. But if I didnโ€™t have the car option might be ok for twice a week. 1.5hrs each way 5 days a week would probably be a no for me at this point in my work life. But entirely depends on how good this opportunity is for you. Is it something not easily found, or good pay, chance to progress your career etc?

[โ€“] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago

I used to go to a specialist high school a 15 min drive away from where I was living. About an hour and 15 by PT, but I usually preferred to take a simpler way with less running (required to make those connections), which bumped it up to about an hour and a half to an hour 45 depending on how fucked the trains were that particular morning.

I think that personally an hour and a half on a train is okay, 2h max, but if it's peak hour and a packed train, that drastically goes down and reduces to about half an hour. By car, I'd be okay with an hour as a passenger, but 30 minutes would probably be my preferred limit as a driver. But I'm still a learner, so by the time I was a full license holder, I would probably be okay with an hour as a driver as well

I guess it also depends on a few other things, though. How'd you find the uni commute? Did you find it draining? I ask because some people find travelling alone to be draining, and if you're going to waste half your energy on trying not to road rage in a traffic jam, do you really want that to immediately precede your work? Or are you the sort of person that finds that kind of useful - like a chance to listen to a bit of pump up music and invigorate some energy into yourself before getting on the grind for the rest of the day?

Another thing to think of: what's your start time, and how much time do you need each morning? Personally, I need at least an hour in the morning before I can tolerate human interaction, and about 20 before I've officially woken up from sleep. So if I had an 8am start time and 45 minute commute, I'd round that up to an hour for a bit of margin, and then I'd be waking up between 6-6:30 each day. But I also know people who'll get up as soon as their alarm goes off, take a quick 5 minute dunny run, 2 minute shower, then they're out the door less than 10 minutes after waking up

It's doable. As long as there's parking you can make the drive work for yourself and it's good to know you can get there by public transport if necessary.

If you were doing that trip more than 2 days it would suck

[โ€“] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

That would be my limit personally (if that driving is not stop start). I did 2 days /week with a similar driving commute except it was 45 min peak, I was able to handle it but I absolutely wouldn't have done an extra day - did turn that down when it was offered. Eventually left it in favour of a job with a 5-15 min commute and I wouldn't trade it for the world...

Loving this music from the movie, Knight of Cups. Exodus, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qYBw2zf0Kg

it's a 4 hobbit movie, so beautiful,

I'm not sure what it's about, seems to be someone drifting through place, time, experience, people and emotions . The only time he spoke of his life was when he spoke of the experience of a loving relationship.
