I think you might struggle to find something like this. Real history takes time to be evaluated and written. Then you have the time to develop a game people actually want to play.

TBH, I see events in the public space get documents leaked and published all the time, or even documentaries being released. I would expect events like the 2008 market crash or Brexit to have enough content for a simple board game at this point. I mean, I’m not expecting Campaign For North Africa level of details ;-)
I agree development time is necessary though.
Your best bet is probably war games of various sorts.
Labyrinth: the war on terror is one that springs to mind, or maybe the “next war” series.
TBH, I thought I’d see the opposite. Good design for war games require access to secret documents, while events in the public space get documents leaked and published all the time, or even documentaries being released. For example, I would expect events like the 2008 market crash or Brexit to have enough content for a simple board game at this point. While we're here, I'll just plug the other boardgame comm, [email protected]. It's a little more active over there :)
It is cumbersome to discover all these places on lemmy :/ Honestly, by the list of communities my instance shows, this one looks the most active. Thank you!
Watergate is 50 years ago but the game of the same name is a fun one and captures the theme nicely.
Just take a lot of fake money, give it all to one person, and then have them lecture the rest of the players about how the reason they don't have any money is people who aren't even playing.
