Rules

1. Be niceDo not make personal attacks against each other, call for violence against anyone, or intentionally antagonize people in the comment sections.

2. Explain incorrect defense articles and takes

If you want to post a non-credible take, it must be from a "credible" source (news article, politician, or military leader) and must have a comment laying out exactly why it's non-credible. Low-hanging fruit such as random Twitter and YouTube comments belong in the Matrix chat.

3. Content must be relevant

Posts must be about military hardware or international security/defense. This is not the page to fawn over Youtube personalities, simp over political leaders, or discuss other areas of international policy.

4. No racism / hatespeech

No slurs. No advocating for the killing of people or insulting them based on physical, religious, or ideological traits.

5. No politics

We don't care if you're Republican, Democrat, Socialist, Stalinist, Baathist, or some other hot mess. Leave it at the door. This applies to comments as well.

6. No seriousposting

We don't want your uncut war footage, fundraisers, credible news articles, or other such things. The world is already serious enough as it is.

7. No classified material

Classified ‘western’ information is off limits regardless of how "open source" and "easy to find" it is.

8. Source artwork

If you use somebody's art in your post or as your post, the OP must provide a direct link to the art's source in the comment section, or a good reason why this was not possible (such as the artist deleting their account). The source should be a place that the artist themselves uploaded the art. A booru is not a source. A watermark is not a source.

9. No low-effort posts

No egregiously low effort posts. E.g. screenshots, recent reposts, simple reaction & template memes, and images with the punchline in the title. Put these in weekly Matrix chat instead.

10. Don't get us banned

No brigading or harassing other communities. Do not post memes with a "haha people that I hate died… haha" punchline or violating the sh.itjust.works rules (below). This includes content illegal in Canada.

11. No misinformation

NCD exists to make fun of misinformation, not to spread it. Make outlandish claims, but if your take doesn’t show signs of satire or exaggeration it will be removed. Misleading content may result in a ban. Regardless of source, don’t post obvious propaganda or fake news. Double-check facts and don't be an idiot.

Per my analysis the F4U outperforms the A10 in almost every important metric. A fancy cockpit does not make the A10 better and I would say the Corsair would outperform the A10 in a dogfight. There also cost, which adjust for inflation is much, much lower for the Corsair. Pilots can be trained quicker. I know the popular thing is to say the 30mm chain gun came first and the airplane second, which sounds good on paper, but means the aircraft is shit. Also, I rated max ceiling as neutral because who cares about max ceiling for an attack aircraft?

Please contact your congressional representatives and let them know that the F4U corsair should replace the A10 as a ground attack aircraft. Thank you.

Not even as a joke does some WWII dogfighting gun beat the GAU-8. The A-10 is a high-redundancy delivery platform to put that fuckoff ridiculous weapon over a target. It spits so much lead that it out-thrusts the engines.

The truly noncredible replacement would be a GAU-8 mounted in a rotorcraft. The pilot noses down to get on-target, and the aircraft translates backwards and upward without altering trajectory.

So what you are saying is that rotorcraft with a GAU-8 should replace Starlink satellites over war zones?

As much as I enjoy the spectacular sound of the piston engines, I can not stress enough that I am fairly concerned modern anti-aircraft measures would be overpowering for these machines.

Nonetheless, this airplane exists and is a thing.

As does this one. Literally a hardened cropduster, as a loitering weapons-delivery platform with infrastructure demands that fit in a shoebox.

The concept of a ground attack aircraft that shoots its cannon at things is well and truly dead in the age of MANPADS. Even the A-10 basically doesn't do that any more. However, a fixed wing piston engine plane that shoots rockets or glide bombs from outside MANPADS range might make some sense. This is a role typically filled by helicopters right now, but a fixed wing plane would offer better range and lower cost.

How about the "Sky Warden" tactical crop duster: https://www.l3harris.com/all-capabilities/skywarden

Those extra 10mm in the A10 are very important, especially for supporting ground combat. It's used to fire at heavily armored targets such as tanks. Also, the A10 's targeting system is more advanced and precise, though that could potentially be implemented on the Corsair. Regardless, the Warthog has better armor, making it more resilient to ground fire from the enemy. I believe that the A10 is better designed for ground combat support than the Corsair.

What congressional representatives are you contacting so that I can counter your arguments with them?

I recently spoke with the senator from Colorado and he's definitely on our side

you forgot that in NATO the more expensive the better (and the worst is I'm half joking: in France for example there is a high refusal from arms factories to build low cost drones like the ones used in Ukraine because they are not expensive enough and so you can't build only a few of them and makes big money with that...).

So you should makes an gold coat for the F4U if you want it to replace the A10 :P.

Go price out what a cylinder cost these days for a Pratt & Whitney double wasp. The Corsair has 18 of them.
