I don't think Zelensky is the hero everyone is making him out to be. He's a regular guy in an unenviable position. He's not doing a spectacular job one way or the other.

I feel like most of the reverence surrounding him is just fluff and propaganda.

An unenviable position sounds like Ukraine is not getting ad-free streaming and he needs to negotiate. He's a regular guy who for years has been successfully defending his country from a world superpower invading, and now another superpower jumping in to help their invaders. Literally the fact that Ukraine still exists means he's doing a spectacular job.

I think you have, in fact, fallen for the widespread propaganda...or are trying to spread it.

Irony.

If this is true, then who is generating the propaganda? Who does it benefit?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 week ago

The NATO bloc is generating it because it benefits them to make their own citizens think the war in Ukraine is going spectacularly well. It's for morale.

The fact that somebody could be so ignorant to even ask such a question is absolutely stunning.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It might be ignorant, but I certainly don't get the impression at all that things are going well in Ukraine despite being exposed to this propaganda, nor do I see how it benefits NATO for its citizens to believe so. It seems to me that believing Russia is weak would make people value NATO less.

But thanks for stopping by to insult me for asking a question, really love that attitude.

You don't get this impression because you're clueless regarding the subject you're opining on. Here is a policy paper you can read to educate yourself https://www.rand.org/content/dam/rand/pubs/research_reports/RR3000/RR3063/RAND_RR3063.pdf

And here I am discussing, trying to not disregard ideas I am cynical of, and instead ask questions to gain understanding. Apparently that is discouraged here.

Thank you for the resource, next time lead with that and skip the insults.

@[email protected], please don’t jump on the uninformed who are engaged in apparent good faith.

I dissuade Party members from putting down people who do not understand. Even people who are unenlightened and seemingly bourgeois should be answered in a polite way. Things should be explained to them as fully as possible. I was turned off by a person who did not want to talk to me because I was not important enough. Maurice just wanted to preach to the converted, who already agreed with him. I try to be cordial, because that way you win people over. You cannot win them over by drawing the line of demarcation, saying you are on this side and I am on the other; that shows a lack of consciousness. After the Black Panther Party was formed, I nearly fell into this error. I could not understand why people were blind to what I saw so clearly. Then I realized that their understanding had to be developed. ― Huey P. Newton

I'll try giving people the benefit of the doubt going forward.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

ty. i don’t always succeed, either.

Sometimes you just read a comment so absurd, it's hard to convince yourself it's a sincere opinion.

I really feel for Zelenskyy, it's such a terrible position to be in.

On the one hand, it must be galling to have to play nice with Trump. You know his word is worthless and he's going to betray Ukraine the first chance he gets, which will probably cost a lot of Ukrainian lives.

On the other hand, if you hard-ball Trump and tell him to fuck off, the war continues and Ukraine probably loses, which also costs a lot of Ukrainian lives.

I really don't see any way this doesn't end badly, unless Europe can somehow step up and get Russia to back down. I don't really see that happening though. I think Ukraine's fate was sealed when Trump won the election TBH.

Yeah, but how much autonomy did he really have to do otherwise? The entire western world was pressuring him to continue the war, not to mention right wing elements in his own country.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago

The decision ultimately lay with him, and he chose to believe the west which proved to be fatal. However, it is also worth noting that there have been multiple offers from Russia to negotiate after that that the Ukrainians categorically refused. Each time the situation for Ukraine continued to get worse as a result.

[–] [email protected] -5 points 1 week ago

Ukraine losing would be terrible for Trump. It makes him look weak and bad at foreign policy. Everyone knows that Russia invaded Ukraine unprovoked, and they'll do it again

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ugh, this sucks.

I hope Europe steps up in a big way.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Europe is materially incapable of stepping up in a big way.

They might be able to contribute more if they diverted the military aid they send to Israel.

They won't.

And even if they were capable, the Ukrainian people DONT WANT TO KEEP FIGHTING. If your ideology demands more blood sacrifice, well, step the fuck up. Get your big boy boots on, get your country to declare war and give you a gun, show people how serious y'all are about opposing Putin or whatever. Otherwise, cope and seethe.
