Weird how she’s off centre in a photo of her by herself.

What's up with the disembodied hand on her shoulder?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

What's up with the disembodied hand tucked up high on the right of that tall heap of grass?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

That's just some Ukrainian men eating pampers grass.

Pretty impressive she has the energy and agility to do that at that age. Suit looks awesome too!

agility

More like aghillity

I’m sure she’s had lots of practice over the decades

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago

Over the century too

That's what I was thinking. I'm not a ghillie suit aficionado, but that seems to be a pretty darn good one.

Bet she starts selling worldwide after this

[–] [email protected] 37 points 2 years ago

Post-war she could easily pivot to making Chewbacca suits.

Wonder if she did that when Germany invaded, too.

[–] [email protected] 40 points 2 years ago (2 children)

She sees the Russian invasion, dusts off an old trunk, and when she opens the lid it's full of natural fibers and sewing patterns.

....and sunflower seeds.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 years ago

Yeah I'm sure she's lived through some shit.

[–] [email protected] 29 points 2 years ago (1 children)

She looks like she's got another 20 years in her. What a unit.

My grandmother died at 99 years old and until about 5 months prior to her death she was still pottering around the garden and doing housework. Some people just seem to save getting old up until the final few weeks of their life.

I met a 90+ year old woman at the post office the other day. She could still drive and was wearing a pink t-shirt that stated "Don't Grow Old, It's a Trap!"

inb4 a bunch of comments asking why they didn't post one of the suits or why she's standing alone in the bushes.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

...but why did they do that though??

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago (3 children)

It's an overplayed joke that camo makes things invisible so they act like it's not there.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

I was playing into it. As in, but why DID they just show her next to a bush?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Isn't it because at one point Trump said in twitter that stealth aircraft were actually invisible?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

It's a long time meme. A decade old at least.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 2 years ago

Do not mess with Mrs. Liubov. She has friends. Who are snipers. In ghillie suits.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 years ago

We all wish we could be that badass.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 years ago (5 children)

How effective is a suit like that (specifically like the one in the image)? The fact that it appears to be all brown seems like it'd be poor cover in a field or forest. Wouldn't you want something that has a mix of different colors in it? I mean, it looks like a rotting hay bale, which works if you're surrounded by lots of rotting foliage, but what if you're not?

[–] [email protected] 19 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Depends entirely where the sniper intends to use it.

If you’re interested, look up Carlos Hathcock, a USMC sniper during the Vietnam war, and considered one of the best snipers for a very long time. I don’t recall the details offhand but one of his confirmed kills was a high ranking military officer. He spent something like 3 days in a gillie suit crawling something like 1000 yards across a field, took out his target, and successfully evaded troops searching for him that walked within feet of his location.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Keep in mind he's thousands of feet in the distance. Up close yeah it's fairly obvious he's not a real plant, but as a speck on the horizon you're fukt

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

From my understanding it's easier to use brown as a base color and add natural foliage to green it up than it is to have a green base color and add dirt to tan it up.

Brown is a lot more common close to the ground than you might think even in summer but it's especially useful when you consider using the suit in fall and early spring.

Ghillie suits are meant to make you vaguely look like a grassy blob. Humans are really good at picking out the shape of a human head/shoulder area so the suit makes that disappear.

It's nice and helpful and all, but maybe it's time to let Mrs. Liubov retire?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago

Should've retired like 40 years ago. I hope she was able to pass on that skill set already. I hope this was a case of "that's what I wanted to do today" and not a case of "that's what has to happen today". When at war, I can understand that priorities change. She probably has a strong bond to going above and beyond for her country, but no one should have to feel that way. I have great respect for her, and I feel great sadness that her skills are even needed currently.
