Congressman Al Green and fellow Democrats began singing the civil rights song "We Shall Overcome," after the House voted to censure the Texas lawmaker.

Green was given the rebuke for heckling and waving his cane at Donald Trump during the president's joint session of Congress. Ten Democrats joined Republicans to vote for the censure.

still pretty amazing that no other democrat stood up in protest, to support this brave man, in face of a fascist, so terribly shameful, they wore pink instead and talked about it like they were doing something

At least some Dems stood by him and sang along in I guess protest of his censure. It's not enough but it's far more than pretty much any Dem has been willing to do.

Ya know, I've heard people complaining that he did too much and was too loud, they didn't do enough and none of it matters anyway. Instead we should be focused on the trump administration forcing a black man out of the room. This is the 21st century civil rights fight.

and I am focusing on how the rest of the entire Democratic leadership and rank and file, sat there, doing nothing, even after someone like Rev Green had the courage to stand, for right and decency, in calling out the fascist lies to his fucking face. fucking cowards. i won't let the same of this go unspoken, which is precisely what they tried to do. you stand when called on, he did, they didn't.

Why though? What good does that do? Focus on how awesome he is and how terrible the republicans were to him.

Democrats have no Constitutional power of majority in either house of Congress, or any of the 3 branches of US government, the only thing they can do is present themselves in opposition of the fascist disassembly of American Democracy, and there was no better opportunity to do that than at the speech on Tuesday night, and they failed miserably to show they would rise to the challenge of the moment, Reverend Green did, he placed himself in jeopardy, this is what spurs Resistance, the others wore pink and sat in their chairs, none rose to support Green. Abject useless Cowards all.

Again, what happened right in the whole situation? Al is a rock star and he got up and sang after the censure with a bunch of people. He's awesome.

I'm beginning to question your intentions.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

Al is a rock star

Just making sure that you realize that he isn't that Al Green.

[–] [email protected] -1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't give a flying fuck what you question

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You're on the cusp of not being civil and getting a break.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Civility as the end all/be all over anything else? Must be a Democrat.

I don't think you're aware of what's happening all around Lemmy. The poster I'm replying to may not as well. You're just helping the trolls without realizing. In a perfect world, yes, we should be able to yell and scream at each other without it having consequences, but that's not the case right now. I'll give you some reasons why:

  • People are distracted by hearing about the democrats instead of this awesome dude standing up for what's right. We should be talking about how cool he is and what a role model he is.
  • Being overly negative is a troll technique, whether you realize you're doing it or not. To be clear, I don't think you're a troll.
  • We are in the midst of an internal coup and dismantling of our government, do you think talking about that part and calling attention to that would help people get their attention? Instead the dude I'm speaking with is distracting from that and talking about the dems. Again, a troll technique. He may or may not be a troll.
  • People skim, if it's boring and repetitive, they'll move on. The dude is repeating boring and repetitive remarks about the dems.
  • This is why I don't accept posts about Biden or Harris, troll baiting, boring, and repetitive.

Here is some light reading in case you missed it (it's also stickied at the top):

No one is screaming. The other person was calling out the other Dems for not supporting Green, who is obviously one of the only ones worth a damn. Ineffectual leadership from an opposition party is far more damaging than simply calling their bullshit for what it is.

Congrats on amalgamating some links, anyone that has a brain knows trump is putin's lap dog, we're pissed because the plan has been published for months in Project 2025 and the Dems have nothing fucking prepared against it, the majority of them at this point are arguably hamstringing resistance more than helping it. Look at the leaks from their leadership/donor meetings, look at Newsome's quick heel turn against trans folks, look at their feckless response to everything that trump and co are doing. They need to be made aware that we can see through their bullshit response, and maybe they'll act, and if not they need to be replaced as soon as possible. Push has come to shove and if they aren't willing to lead then they need to get out of the damn way.

[–] [email protected] -2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You must have had a plan to defeat project 2025, what exactly should they have done?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah, because I'm an elected official, right? Someone who ran a whole campaign and got people to vote for me based on my qualities of leadership?

But sure let's play this game: How about fucking anything? Delay, obstruct, filibuster, use the GOP's own playbook against them for a start. Literally anything would be better than holding up useless little signs while capitulating, then admonishing Green for actually having a pair. They should be out rallying people, at the very least making some noise. They should be applying pressure to vulnerable GOP members who barely won their seats by organizing in their districts, make them state their direct support of Trump's and Elon's bullshit to their constituents.

FFS, Elon, the richest piece of shit in the world, is the easiest thing to get people worked up against if they actually embraced working class issues, but they're too afraid they'll upset their rich donors.

The saddest thing is this was all so very predictable the moment they decided Biden was their candidate. If I still had facebook, I'd show you my old post stating that Biden would win against Trump, serve one term where he would do little to nothing to actually counter him ("fundamentally, nothing will change") or sway America away from MAGA mentality, then lose to someone even worse than Trump (Trump 2.0 is worse, but even I couldn't predict America would be this stupid).

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Why don't you spend all that energy trying to split Trump from his base?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

You're getting your Al Greens mixed up. The Reverend Al Green is this guy. We're talking about this guy.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 week ago

Ten Democrats joined Republicans to vote for the censure

I'm surprised that I'm not surprised.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

What does censuring mean slash involve?
