A place to meme about the glorious ROMAN EMPIRE (and Roman Republic, and Roman Kingdom)! Byzantines tolerated! The HRE is not.

RULES:

  1. No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, bigotry, etc. The past may be bigoted, but we are not.

  2. Memes must be Rome-related, not just the title. It can be about Rome, or using Roman aesthetics, or both, but the meme itself needs to have Roman themes.

  3. Follow Lemmy.world rules.

Not sure where to start on Roman history?

Explanation: Mount Vesuvius in Italy is an active volcano. The ancient Roman city of Pompeii was built nearby. Sadly, when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, it did so with such suddenness and force that many in the town were killed going about their daily business, eventually burying the entire town beneath a layer of ash, never to be resettled.

On the upside, some 2000 years later, we've gotten some incredible archeological finds from this!

The part that blew my mind was seeing the ~5 meter tall column of ash and debris that fell on Pompeii in a nearby museum. There was a time stamp on each layer and the whole column fell over a ~1 day period. It wasn't until that moment that the reality of the situation clarified in my mind, and made me imagine experiencing that.
