Explanation: Mount Vesuvius in Italy is an active volcano. The ancient Roman city of Pompeii was built nearby. Sadly, when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, it did so with such suddenness and force that many in the town were killed going about their daily business, eventually burying the entire town beneath a layer of ash, never to be resettled.
On the upside, some 2000 years later, we've gotten some incredible archeological finds from this!
