Why are some comments highlighted (or "greylighted"), e.g. the three in the middle, and some are not?

Is it something to do with my instance (lemmy.ca)? Their instance? Invidividual users?

(I'm viewing in a web browser. Default settings, lemmy.ca)

They are new comments since the last time you viewed the post.

Thanks. Although it just occurred to me: I'm pretty sure that was the first time I was viewing that post.

Confirmed. I just opened a post I'd never opened before, and one comment was highlighted. It had been posted just four minutes earlier, so perhaps it is determined by a time limit.

They are new comments. If you see any comment which look "more" highlighted (e.g. yellow background) and is pinned to the top of the post, then it is a manually distinguished comment by a moderator.
