The powers, which critics decry as undemocratic, include allowing heads of council to propose bylaws and pass them with the support of one-third of councillors, veto bylaws and hire and fire department heads.

This might be useful in conjunction with a Carney government's agenda to build housing.

There's no reason mayors should be more powerful than any other member of their council. But municipal governments are just toys the provinces play with so who cares I guess.

I'm just thinking of a silver lining. Generally not a huge fan of the strong mayor powers.
