Right-wing conservative historian and euroskeptic Karol Nawrocki has won the Polish presidential runoff by a whisker. The result is a bitter blow for Donald Tusk's pro-European government.

Poland's State Election Commission announced on Monday morning that the right-wing conservative historian and euroskeptic Karol Nawrocki had received 50.89% of the vote in Sunday's presidential runoff, putting him marginally ahead of his liberal-conservative, pro-European rival, Rafal Trzaskowski, on 49.11%.

Nawrocki will be inaugurated in August, succeeding President Andrzej Duda, who, after two terms in office, was no longer able to run for president.

Nawrocki, a 42-year-old historian from Gdansk, was nominated by the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party. PiS presented Nawrocki as a non-partisan, independent "citizens' candidate" although his campaign was paid for and organized by the party and his program aligned with that of PiS.

I don't understand how anyone that's studied history can be right-wing.

If they studied right-wing history. Poland is actually excellent example. Ever since 1989 we had literally 3 communist books published. Every other book, even light romances and YA adventure books have to include ritual attack on communism and/or other leftism. History books, even on unrelated topics also have a lot of that. Media, all media, keep strict if informal agreement to never ever publish anything that would put left in good light.
Leftermnost voices and politicians in mainstream are neoliberal blairites. Non mainstream isn't much better, mostly few remaining trots and anarchists whose opinion very often align with US Department of State.

Point is, we live in neoliberal TINA information bubble stricter than even wettest dreams of senator McCarthy. Inside it it's very easy to have your entire worldview shaped.

And all this even before we talk about corruption and criminal genesis of entire current political class.

Polish trots were in a kinda weird place, not much different from the usual western ones, but that automatically made them better compared to for example shitawful anarchists which had only two notable actions: Attempted arson of USSR consulate in 1991 and attacking and snitching to the cops on ML youth who tried to join the "unified left" manifestation in iirc 2014. Said manifestation then marched rightwards in real time with grand finale being commemorating Home Army, so in retrospect it was a win for the ML youth to not participate, but still.

Most people don't study history. A lot of those that do, do want specific patterns to repeat.

Also humans don't form their political positions through knowledge and reasoning, but primarily through relationships. If everybody around you is right-wing and you want to fit in, you're going to be come right wing, rationalizing any knowledge of history you might have into supporting your right-wing position.
