My week's been good! :3 nervous tho bc I have my driver's test on Monday

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Good luck with your test. Took my third tries. By the third attempt I was used to the drill and went in assuming I'd fail again but it took the nerves away and passed (in truth I think I'd finally got some road sense) .

A mixed bag but manageable. Think I'm in the middle of an attack of sciatica right now but got a mercifully quick NHS physio appointment next week so we'll see. Best wishes all.

im passively dying and actively not doing anything about it

Mine was good! Half term and did an extended family get together. Hadn't seen that branch for ten years.

Yeah alright cheers mate, how was yours?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago (3 children)

It was fine, honestly nothing really happening to shout about!

I've been on and off with running since Feb as I keep getting shin splints which is really annoying. I'll take a break for a couple of weeks, start again, and by my 3rd run my shins and calves hurt again. I'm convinced it's to do with a new pair of running shoes I started using in January, but I need to book a physio appointment to get some proper advice. I'm dreading them saying that I'll need to take months off to recover.

Hey, I'm not a physio but I managed to get back into running after suffering bad shin splints on multiple attempts with a few basic home exercises and a small, mostly temporary, change to my running form. I don't think this was the exact article, but most of the exercises I was doing match the ones in this article. I did a whole bunch after every run, before I had cooked down fully.

And while running, I tried to run with a higher cadence than normal. My normal cadence is probably somewhere around the high 160s, but I did my best to keep it well over 170. I think I probably slipped back down to my normal cadence as the run went on, but at least having it in mind as much as possible, especially at the start of any run as I was warming up, helped reduce the impact force through the legs. At least, that's why I think it helped.

Some new big cushioned shoes (I started using Asics Novablast around this time for training) also may have helped, but I don't think the timeline quite matches there. I can't remember for sure.

Thanks for the article, I'll take a look! My cadence is already quite high, about 180 I think? I'm a short arse so I'm convinced I'm at a bit of a disadvantage when it comes to running!

Definitely get the physio appt. Sooner rather than later.

I've just found out I broke my hip rock climbing.

In January.

Explains why I've been 'uncomfortable' for 5 months.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I would assume breaking your hip would be extremely painful! What's the recovery process for a broken hip?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah. I would have thought so as well, I always assumed a hip break would be wheelchair territory however it seems their are breaks and their are breaks.

Mine is vertical and hairline (not the technical words they used but the ones I understand).

I'm waiting on some more x-rays and my next physio appt. to find out next steps and time frame.

For now I will just keep chomping down on painkillers and stopping my 2k run I try do 3 times a week (and now understand why I've been failing and struggling).

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

LOL.

I've got a tendon pain in my arm and was moaning about it... I'm gonna shut up now 🙂

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

Nah. Pains pain and if it hurts it's valid!

Tendon pain can be a bitch.

I've heard it's worth getting running shoes that are properly fitted at a dedicated running shop but I've not tried it myself. Feel pretty fortunate that it doesn't seem to be too hard on my legs at least!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I did that with my first shoes and they were great, however they don't last too long. I bought the next year's edition of the shoe I had and I immediately noticed they felt firmer, so I'm pretty sure it's that. I've only put about 100km on them so I feel a bit ugh about buying a new pair already!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Understandable, I've had my current pair for years and years, to the point there's barely any tread left! But I'm worried about getting new shoes that aren't as comfy for me as I suspect I lucked out with the random pair I bought (from Sports Soccer?)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

Oh wow, how many kms do you think you've put on them? They reckon anywhere from about 700km and they start to loose their cushioning and the chances of injury increase. If you're running regularly it would be worth going to a running shop and trying some different shoes!

It's only Tuesday! I didn't had a chance to completely fuck it up yet. But I'm on a good track 😅

Ha, well I was a bit late on posting this as I've been busy, really it's for how the previous week went!
