"Right now, the most effective thing you can do is flood Congress with calls to show that the American people don't want to go to war with Iran," said the advocacy group Demand Progress.

From the article, "the advocacy group Demand Progress Wednesday, urging Americans to call 1-833-STOP-WAR to connect with their representatives and push them to support war powers resolutions."

I called this number, gave them my zip code and they automatically connected me to the offices of my representatives to leave a voicemail urging them to support a war powers resolution to stop a war in Iran.

It was super easy. A phone call is worth 1,000 emails.

Isn't this an impeachable offense? Like, declaring war and mobilizing troops is not something you can unilaterally do as president. That's Congress's job. Well, I guess we'll see what happens. Congress has so far let Trump do whatever he wants, and so has the supreme court. So, πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

I'm not defending TACOman here, but bombing the middle east is like a normal afternoon for basically any US president since at least Bush the First

Edit. Shit. I agree with you. And it looks like I'm arguing probably. I hate that I am so cynical, but then I just... I mean... look at everything that keeps happening, you know?

And they never declare war. We have conflicts and situations but never war- too much paperwork.

Did we ever actually declare war on Vietnam?

Special military operation

Imagine if he did this because he didn't want to be called a chicken

This is the part where past decisions come to bite us all in the ass. There is an "exception" congress gave to the president which allows them to do some military operations bullshit IF there is imminent threat AND they give congress a written notice to both the speaker of the house and the president of the senate. They have 60 days, or whatever arbitrary time line they decide upon, to finish up what they are doing unless congress says they can stay longer. Wartime Powers Act https://www.congress.gov/bill/93rd-congress/senate-bill/440 At least it reads something like that. Congress just can't be bothered to do their job really. We all know Orange Chicken Little is a pro at making up "imminent threats".

Also the 2001 Authorization of The Use of Military Force, which has no expiry date, and allows unrestricted military action against anyone the administration believes played a role in the 9/11 attacks. As far as I'm aware all Trump has to do is claim Iran produced or sheltered terrorists at some point (even if it was in the past) and he's more or less legally in the clear. There's already precedent.

Under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, the 2001 AUMF was used to justify the deployment of US forces to Afghanistan, the Philippines, Georgia, Yemen, Djibouti, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Iraq, and Somalia.

Again, past decisions.

Yeah, the guy who was impeached two times with nothing to come out of it, is scared to get impeached a third time.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 days ago

I don't know the specifics but the president can move troops without congressional approval as long as they're there less than 90 days or something but that can be extended.

Congress hasn't declared war on anyone since WW2.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 days ago

DOJ will just say β€œit’s ok” and it’ll be allowed apparently

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago

screams in Vietnam, Korea, Iraq and probably others

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago

Impeachment is purely political. Anything is an impeachable act.

I looked into this yesterday, it seems we haven't declared war since WW2, and stuff like this is usually done with AUMF (Authorizations for Use of Military Force). Those can be issued after the fact. I think the president can basically do whatever for 60 days if I understand correctly.
