Are you talking about the post score? Number goes up/down as people upvote or downvote, if so.

Its the amount of votes that the post has

The score, or karma if we go by reddit terms

It can be a little confusing because I guess some instances or communities don't show the individual up and down vote counts so it's not always obvious the total number to the side is one subtracted from the other.
